Class of 2016

I gave my notice this morning after waffling a couple of times recently. Felt a little sick about the end of a lifetime of income, but that's why we saved it I guess. Thanks to all on this board for the great information, tools and encouragement. On to the next chapter!

Congrats for Willers and inky! Along with some delayed congrats for DanD76.

Thanks! Today I am working through the announcements. It's surprisingly emotional. I feel fortunate to have ended on a great note. I know that many here weren't as fortunate.

Adding myself back into the list. I got dropped during the conversion I think. :)

Still on track; actually haven't gone into the office since late November, so already feeling mostly retired. Have some transitional stuff to take care of still (cashing out vacation and stock options, submitting my notice, etc.), but it's all pretty minimal and straightforward.

Still on track; actually haven't gone into the office since late November, so already feeling mostly retired.

I've been off too since the end of October due to my recent three-month-on, three-month-off schedule. Logging in this week and seeing the hundreds of emails that had accumulated in my absence raised my blood pressure a little... until I realized I could just quickly scan and then delete them! Very cathartic.

Everyone has been so super nice and supportive that I was (almost) having second thoughts. In addition, it feels awkward to answer questions about what I'm doing next. I don't want to tell people I'm retiring since it might cause envy or bad feelings, and I also don't want people speculating about my finances and how I could retire at the age of 43. I've told almost everyone except very close friends that I'm taking a year or two off from software development to pursue my passions of travel, writing, and photography. This is pretty close to the truth, except that I have no intention of ever returning to work. :)

Same here, congratulations on surviving the last year. I went to the Carribean for the month of November and only showed up at the office twice in December. (Remotely working, so to speak)

I can't imagine going back to doing my day job, I have gotten quite used to managing my time on my own schedule:cool:

Today I put in a request to corporate to transfer my cell phone into my own personal account, it is nice they offer this to those leaving the company. I just hope my unlimited international data plan can move with it!

Well I had my first retirement luncheon today. I work with groups at 2 sites so 2 lunches. The second one is tomorrow. It was a nice informal affair. Most of my co-workers are younger than I am but still have a hard time understanding why I would want to retire young (I am 60). I explain to them that It's time for me to do other things in life.

Congrats! I've gotten some of the "you're too young to retire comments too". Good luck to you!

Well my 12/31/2016 date has been confirmed by my manager (see my earlier post, company re-structure and severance package). I was told that they reserve the right to extend it past that date (per the bonus package that I signed) but they "promise not to pull it in". I said, "Well what if I want you to pull it in?".

So I have officially started my final year, and it is going to be interesting. I have dubbed it my "Left Shark" year....

{Google that if you need to..... ;-)

May the months fly by! Today was it for me. Packed up the last boxes, turned in my keys, last hugs and out the door by lunchtime. Still isn't real yet. Maybe on Sunday night. The general plan is to goof off for a month. Then start house hunting for a downsize. Then a month or two in Maine during July - August to avoid the heat of the south.

My Great Big Plan assumes that we live on cash and earning from the taxable account from May-December of this year, and after that, we would start selling shares. If the markets are still crap, we will cash in GICs (CDs) instead. Of my 14 stocks, two are on a "dividend cut watch". If more than those two cut their dividends, I'll start to worry. But I'd probably cut our planned spending before I'd delay my retirement.

Suppose i should stop watching cnbc predicting the end of the world. One of the commenters i think his name is kelley on fast money tonight tell people to sell everything in their 401k and go to cash. How irresponsible!

No.

If I had to worry about every fuxuation in the market I wouldn't retire. That would be too stressful.

Yes
I am definately going to Left Shark mode for my last few months

Great,

I guess if I want a luncheon or cake party I will have to start to tell people.
