The Class of 2014

Thanks, Martyb, and congrats to you, too. I have been asked by co-workers why I am not retiring on July 7 as I would get paid for the July 4 holiday. For one, I didn't want to risk pulling office coverage on the 3rd, the day before the holiday when few people would be around in case of an emergency. Also, I want to generate as little W-2 income as possible as it dings my SS survivor benefits. As it is, I won't get any of these benefits for at least 6 months as my earned income is too great for someone who is not FRA. My agency will pay me for my unused vacation and sick leave but it is a mixed blessing due to the SS clawback. I feel I have to blow this "bonus" money. I plan to buy a new car when the 2015 models come out.

I've been asked the same question. The answer is that I'm a federal employee, and my retirement plan (CSRS) is set up in such a way that if I had not retired by the 3rd at the very latest, I would have had to wait a full additional month before I started receiving my pension payment. By retiring on the 3rd, I'll get my first check on or about August 1st. If I retired on the 4th or later....it would be September 1st before I got paid. By retiring on the 3rd, which is a Thursday, I'll be giving up one day of pay.

Well, pulled the trigger today. The boss isn't too thrilled even though I'm confident the world won't stop when I leave. Last official day will be 31 Dec but will be done working mid-November and will be retired at the ripe old age of...40. :)

I haven't formally introduced myself but I will soon...just hard to type out the full story on my Kindle!

..............

Here's a plot of class size by year (I got bored waiting for my wife to return from the farmers market with dutch letters). Looks like a banner year.

Didn't find any lists for 2009 or earlier.

Sbwitte... I'm looking across Boundary Pass to Orcas Island as I am typing this. I am on one of the Canadian islands. It's a beautiful morning, and the start of a long weekend for us Canadians.

Sea Kayaker, thank you. We're really looking forward to living there someday. We're planning on a vacation there this summer. However we can't even stay in our own house because it is rented full time. The things we all have to give up to be able to retire early.... 😃

Salt Spring perhaps?
Had a friend that used to own a small cottage there.

That is certainly a beautiful part of the world. Victoria is one of the most beautiful cities I've ever visited.

Officially done and retired as of today! 7/1/2014

I was there just a short while ago. Stayed in eastsound for a few days. Adore the place and the people.

Also tried to find a certain lady there I met last year, but that didn't go well :(

I did a 4 hour circumnavigation of my little Gulf Island this past weekend. Had a nice view of Orcas and its neighbouring islands. That island in the distance more or less in line with the bow of my kayak is Orcas BTW. Iphone camera makes it look farther away than it looks - I could probably paddle there in just over an hour.

Great pic, Sea Kayaker. Have you given notice already?

My wife and I are going on holidays soon - upon my return to work I will give notice. I am giving notice July 15, with the intention of being done with the company on Sept. 15. I have a feeling they are not going to see 2 months notice as enough. It will be an interesting conversation. There are many who will be blindsided by this.

I gave 2 months notice.....and they didn't think that was enough. We compromised on 4 months, which ended up being pretty tough to achieve. Good luck!
