What did you do today? 2016 version

Elizabeth - that sounds like an awesome program.

I've had some fun the last two days... mixed bag.

Yesterday I met a friend for coffee and a movie. We went to see the Revenent. Meh. Acting and cinematography were exceptional. Pacing of the movie was not so great. Long semi-boring stretches followed by a few moments of intense (and graphic) action.

Right before meeting my friend, I got voicemails and emails from both boys schools saying their schools were in lockdown. For older son this is the second lockdown of the school year. There was a suspected shooter at San Diego Naval Hospital. Older son's school is adjacent (with a freeway in between but there (with the huge San Diego Zoo in between) - so no clue why they locked it down. Turns out to have been a big mistake - no shots fired... just loud banging in the mechanical room. Lockdowns were lifted by the time the previews were over.

This morning I went down to the same area - to drop off the kids and attend Italian class. Teacher cancelled. Unfortunately, traffic sucks during rush hour on the return... and it took me 45 minutes to go 10 miles.

I'm going to make up for sitting on my butt in traffic by working out.

Picked up a prescription, then went to the gym for the first time since Friday. Not like we didn't get any exercise in the meantime moving snow! DW had a bit of cabin fever so wanted to go to lunch at Ruby Tuesdays and had a 50% off coupon for one of the meals. Then a minor grocery run at the store right across the street from the restaurant and then home. Roads are a lot better than yesterday so progress is being made. We even had a mail delivery! Given the size of those little mail carrier vehicles I didn't expect that until at least Friday.

Lost our 13 year old dog Cody today. Lost my dad unexpectedly less than 2 weeks ago, now Cody. January needs to be over!

Spent the afternoon with DD. Lunch at a nice brew pub. An hour at the lawyer's to get a new will, medical POA and financial POA all squared away. She will be my representative in all such matters. Then a couple hours enjoying ice cream and talking, mostly about her upcoming wedding plans. No engagement yet, but they have been looking at rings. Sounds like he plans to ask her dad for her hand in marriage. How about that?

As I type I'm sitting here in my dream house, listening to the marching bands in the parades going by about half a block away. Mardi Gras is Feb 9th, so there will be plenty of parades between now and then and we can pick and choose which to go to or not. I like the daytime parades.

I love living this close to the parade route, although I may not feel that way in the morning if there is much mess left over. Usually there isn't but we shall see.

Our children invited us out to celebrate our anniversary. We said we wanted to go for lunch, in order to keep them from having to spend too much money. The idea was to go out for a good family meal together, and we do not see that making them spend more money would make it nicer.

Just came back from that fun lunch, and resting a bit before continuing to tackle the wood flooring project. I am now working on the staircase, which is the last thing in the home still covered with dingy carpet.

Finished installing a new IR sauna room in the basement.

I built traditional saunas in our last two homes from scratch. DW had no previous experience with them, but much to my delight she wound up using them even more than I did.

This time I decided to try an infrared version instead of the traditional hot rocks, and I bought a modular sauna that came in just six parts (four walls, floor and ceiling). It still took half a day to put together, but I love it.

I got hooked on saunas many decades ago because so many Air Force base gyms have them. There's nothing quite like a good sweat to neutralize an incipient cold or just relax you after a stressful day.

Read halfway through a book of short science fiction stories about Mars. Apparently most were written well before any NASA probes went there but that doesn't make the writing bad. I'll probably finish the book tomorrow and start on another.

Deleted a Google account I did not remember having.

Long ago I had set up youtube account, used to sign in occasionally. But not in many months. Seems when google bought youtube they created an all knowing google account for me.

Well, I don't care for anything google does, so the account is now history.

Be interested to see if the junk mail input to my account will diminish.

The next week I invested in snow chains and a snow blower. They make a huge difference when we get hit bad and we lose places to put the snow.

Still have to move some more snow this afternoon to widen the road. I have a delivery tomorrow that needs just a bit more space. I picked up a set of chains for the Bobcat yesterday and have also ordered a snow blower that should be in late this week. Won't help for this one and if being ready means I never need it, then money well spent! The blower should let me just do a pass up and down the road about 12' wide while staying on the level surface and not have the issue of being able to get too close to the ditch or the steep side of the road side.

I also have a bobcat snow blower for the toolcat and chains. If your road is dirt/gravel you have to be careful about the angle of the blower or you could dig and blow a bunch of dirt. This is especially true if the road isn't totally frozen. Enjoy

Yes, blower is for the Bobcat. No rocks on our road and not a lot of gravel anymore either. Jabbahop, makes sense about the angle. I try to leave an inch or so of snow when blowing but will have to be careful.

I was able to get the road a bit wider this morning, chains make a big difference. Really warmed up here so a lot of melting going on today.

Today I did my taxes using Tax act and for the first time I missed the old paper way where you could actually see and do the math .

Kitty-sitting a friend's cat for the day. She is safely behind French Doors on the porch but my two cats have been staring at her from the other side for hours. I've been staring at all three fascinated by the body language. Meanwhile I'm lolling the day away with a big Sunday paper and rare MN sunshine pouring through the windows. I think it has reached 40 degrees today. Feels like spring, but it is far too early in the year to get hopes up.

Racked leaves and trimmed bushes and trees in the front yard. Also pulled out some plants we don't want growing. This is becoming a major deal as we will be replacing old growth. A total of 16 Lowes leaf bags were filled by me today. It was hot out...75 F and I worked up a good sweat.

58 degrees today and sunny so a lot of melting going on here too. Gym day for both of us, then just reading & hanging out here.
