Stimulus checks?

Anyone get their stimulus check yet? I thought I was supposed to have my direct deposited by today (May 2) because the last 2 digits of my social security end between 00-20. I already filed federal taxes electronically with quicken and was set up to direct deposit (but I owed on the federal, so I paid them).

Did I read those rules wrong?

Awaiting these rebates, kickbacks, election year bribes, pot sweeteners, stimulus checks seems to me to be like watching paint dry, waiting for the popcorn to finish in the microwave or watching your grass grow~the more that you anticipate it's arrival, the farther back in the queue your name will appear.

Forget about it and it will then appear.

Those getting an actual check, look into local retailers offering to sweeten the deal for you.

In my area, Sears, Kmart, Home Depot, several grocery stores and others are offering to cash your check into a gift card and add 10% to it.

If you can figure out a way to make 10% risk free on your money right now (other than this), clue me in!

We're going to convert ours from a $1600 check to a $1760 supermarket gift card.

Sounds like a sweet deal to me. I have not herd of it in my part of the woods, but I may be interested in that as I plan on just dumping our $1600 intro a MMF and get less than 4%.

I figure we're gonna buy groceries and the card oughta cover us for close to a year since we buy much of our food at costco.

Check the grocery stores in your area. Kroger, Albertsons and Raleys/Nob Hill/Bel-Air are doing it in my neck of the woods.

By the way, this doesnt work if you're getting the check direct deposited. You need the actual check.

And thats one gift card you definitely wont want to lose...

Since I owed IRS $600 this year, I sent them a check in April so I assume that I will get a paper check in the summer sometime. I'm sure that the grocery stores assume that we will buy plenty of unnecessary items, or misplace the card, with this "free $" as they have to offset the 10% bonus expense someway.

hmm...would you even get direct deposit if you didnt get a refund and requested it by DD..otherwise, how would they have your bank number and routing?

If you got a refund and gave bank info, you'll get the stimulus check direct deposited. If you paid by check, you'll get a check.

I paid by direct withdrawal, but IIRC that doesnt get you a direct deposit. At least I hope not...I want my 10% spiff!

You don't need the check at my local Kroger. I bought $1200 with a credit card that gives me 5% back, so 15% discount for me at Kroger for a while!

Deposited 4/29/08 PENFED Account. Trading for Kroger Gift Cards ($1,320 worth). Going to Charge them to PENFED VISA for another 2% Cash Back. Not sure if I will be able to also get Gas Credit from Kroger (think not).

CFB already called Kroger - Have to use the Kroger discount card (which I already have) that is how they keep track of the amount of the rebate I think.

Yeah, watch out for exclusions. Generally around here grocery gift cards cant be used for stamps, bottle return fees, and that sort of thing. Some exclude milk, cigarettes and alcohol.

Not yet. My SSN ends in 87. My wife's ends in 61. I think we'll start putting her name first on the tax returns starting next year.

We just got my wife's car back from the local body shop where we had some body work done. Interestingly enough, the total bill came to $1,209. Well, take nine bucks out of our wallet, and there goes our stimulus check...

I can confirm the Kroger deal. Just picked up Kroger gift cards worth $1320 by paying $1200. They do not even ask about the rebate. I think they reworded their promotion so it is not tied to the rebate anymore.
So we can basically get into these deals at more than one store.

Cool on the Kroger deal. Maybe Raleys will be shamed into following suit.

In any case, looks like I'm definitely getting a check and not DD. I have a really low SS # and didnt see the DD.

You can still get in on some of the promotions. As outlined above Kroger give you 10% without even asking for the rebate.

I have mine, of which I have already spent half, and will spend about 2/3 total by the end of this month. The rest I'll use as gas money for the next 3 months.
