I know that I have been past my physical peak for a very LONG time, but at 55 I had not realized I had passed my financial-decision-making peak only 2 years ago. :bat:

Otherwise I might have had a party.

The silver lining is that as you age you become wiser and declining cognitive function, not age, is what eventually robs you of your financial decision making abilities. So what can you do to maintain, or perhaps even improve, your cognitive function? According to Dr. Jeffrey Toth, a psychology professor at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and co-author of the study "Fluency, Familiarity, Aging, and the Illusion of Truth," there are a number of ways to maintain and possibly improve your cognitive function.
"Physical exercise, mental stimulation, diet, and social interaction can all help maintain your cognitive abilities," says Dr. Toth, "and of these four, physical exercise, especially aerobic exercise, appears to be the most important, with mental stimulation a close second, especially if that stimulation is truly novel and challenging."

I'm joking of course, as I know I am fitter and smarter than I've ever been

Oh-oh! Then a lot of the rest of us are in big trouble! 55 years old sounds pretty young to me. :)

Like all these studies, who really knows? I think the underlying message is that as you grow older your cognitive processes will decline so you may want to think about simplifying your financial affairs a.l.a. unclemick. But when to do that? It's all in the timing

I may buy a couple of small inflation-adjusted SPIAs for an 80th birthday present to myself, if I live that long. Now that would be simple. :)

Face it Alan, you're a stud muffin:D

Thanks for reminding me - I'm also better looking than I ever used to be  (who needs head hair anyway?)

Retirement is good for the body and mind. I think you're going to be just fine Alan. :)

I really need to start working out, unless someone can find the study that shows that less physical exercise is good for us (I mean, if we can find studies that say heavy drinkers live longer....).

I just saw a wine glass today that said " I never exercise it may make me spill my drink ". :)

My Mom is 94 and she is as sharp as she always was . She knows all her investments and beats me at completing the crossword .In fact she just decided she's getting a kindle . So Alan you have a long way to go . I was going to add unless your early years did you in but I'm Irish and your history looks kind of bland to me except for the smoking at 14 . We all waited until fifteen to sneak smokes in the alley .:)

I think I'm in love with your Mom :smitten:

While doing the "Cardio Challenge today I was jogging around with a 70 yr old lady who we have got to know this year at the gym. She is fantastically fit, smart and witty.
