I want to buy a lightweight inexpensive notebook for travel. I will use it for basic computing (microsoft office) and Internet/email. I want it to be compatible with my current PC so I don't want to get a MAC. My ideal notebook would be 2.8 lbs and cost $500. Is there such a thing these days?

I have never found used laptops to be a good deal. If you browse the relevant areas of fatwallet.com or techbargains.com, you will often see new laptops in the $450 +/- $50 range that are far better than similarly priced used laptops. You won't find one that's 2.8 lbs in that price range, unfortunately - or if you do, PM me so I can buy one!
Other than making sure it has built-in wireless networking, my advice would be to check those sites for deals and then decide how much $ it's worth to you for a lighter laptop. Most low-end laptops are in the 6 to 7 pound range, not including a case.
Also, if you buy used, count on buying a new battery pack in the near future. Those puppies are usually in the $100 range.

You might also find some good deals in Dell's outlet (www.delloutlet.com). The Latitude D420 is about that weight, and I've seen them as low as $600-700.

It is highly unlikely to find a new ultraportable laptop under $500, except possibly under the brand Averatec. They sell their laptops at bestbuy, staples, etc and as fall as I know they are the cheapest in 12inch ultraportables, however the quality of the laptops are not that good.
For used laptops, there are many options though I would not go to Dell Outlet. Rather, I would check out http://www.ebay.comor http://www.craigslist.com. Routinely, users sell nice older ultraportables on these sites. But, be sure you don't get ripped off on eBay. It is unlikely you will get ripped off on Craigslist, but you'll be meeting in person.
For online discounts on laptops, I would recommend surfing http://www.boddit.com. I have used it for other stuff because I already have a laptop, but they mainly have deals on everything.
