Canon PowerShot A520 shutter cover problem

I've had this camera for 2 years. Recently, the shutter cover that opens and closes when you turn on/off the camera has gotten temperamental and sometimes only opens partially. It will open fully when I give it a little nudge and then will open/close normally when I turn the camera on and off. I thought the problem occurred because I haven't used it much recently so the last few days I turn the camera on/off repeatedly and that looked like I fixed the problem. This morning when I turned the camera on, the shutter opened fully a couple of times then it opened only partially again. After nudging it, it went back to normal.

Any clue?

I'm leaving the country 8 hours so I won't be able to respond after that for awhile.

Could have dust in it. Try blowing out shudder cover with compressed air in a can.

Sounds like Canon may have a manufacturing defect MJ.

We bought an A520 for Mom a couple of years ago and it started doing the same thing about the time the warranty ran out. At first we thought it might be low batteries, but that was easy to exclude. She has learned to do the same as you and just gives it a little push when it doesn't open all the way.

I have an A540 (supposedly the same body) which does not exhibit this behavior.

This problem may not be isolated, I googled "canon a520 lens cover" and this was near the top...

My Canon Powershot A510 has had exactly the same problem for maybe a year now.
I have learned to live with it, and will do so until I replace it.

After you get to Chiang Mai go to Photo Bug shop. They should be able to help you. Also, I finally found canned air if you need it.

I arrived yesterday in Chiang Mai and today after not using the camera for 2 days, I thought I would turn it on just to check it and of course, since the "camera" knows I'm watching, the shutter cover opened normally. It will probably wait and open partially when I have to take a fast and interesting shot.

That used to happen on our S100, but it fixed itself.

we have the same Powershot, and though ours opens every time, it doesnt close all the way...it stays 1-2 mm open....but as mentioned, we deal with it
