Some of you who are within 10-15 years either way of my age might think that the thread titled, "How Low Dow" is a war protest thread; turns out it’s primarily about the stock market but then so could this one if you care to make the connection. I’m curious to know what’s going on in your neck of the woods today and where were you five years ago today.

We’ve been informed that our (work) building is not a target of protest today because it is not owned by a corporation. Truth be told it’s owned by German speculators. Five years ago there were protesters everywhere, today I saw none; then there was a roar from the street for several hours at this time of day, today it seems that the parade has already passed by, was scheduled to start ½ block from my building at 7:30 a.m.

NotMuch and Soon2, that really brings me back.

I hear drums and disarray off in the distance but no particular tune, 2, 4, 6, 8....

February 15, 2003 I was in San Francisco at a law firm management seminar. I could hear the protesters and helicopters outside the windows of the Nob Hill hotel conference room. The DH and I went walking through the crowds afterwords. Sad reminders of the past. Now more than 5 years later and we are still in Iraq and the reasons keep changing.

Today, I am in a state park in southern Oklahoma listening to the grackles and feeling the sun.

There's battle lines being drawn
And nobody's right, if everybody's wrong

Five years ago I was traveling for business and didn't see / participate in anything. Every year since then I've been in the parades in San Francisco. Today, back at work. Depressed, deflated, and looking to the election as the only (small, flickering) light at the end of this tunnel.

Wartime is only the other side of peacetime, but if you've ever seen how wars are won....

Would have voted four years ago for the candidate who said it's over the day I'm inaugurated. Still waiting....

This is great, I'm day dreaming. I'd like to see a thread along the lines of "What are you doing today, out in the real world (of R or semi-R?).

Tell us more! I also enjoyed donheff's description yesterday.

Like most Canadians, I was thinking..........."What the f*ck are you doing down there?"

You said it! I often wonder about that, too.

Many Canadians I've met have jokes about how Canada differs from The States. My favorite was:

Have you ever been in the Rockies before? I've been thru the Rockies in Montana, Wyoming and Colorado but this is my first time in the Canadian Rockies. Oh, do the Rockies extend into The States?

If you can read this post thank a teacher.

If you can read it in English thank a solider, sailor, airman , or marine for protecting and defending your freedom, including the one to disagree.

We live in a world where "We can't just all get along"

Thank you brave solders. Thank you defenders on the sea and in the air. And thank you to those who are called to be "One of the few, the Proud . . ."

Thank you and I hope with all my heart that your next commander-in-chief will restore the qualities of integrity, honesty, and rational thought to the office. I hope that our new leader will serve our country well and keep it from harm instead of subverting the Constitution you are sworn to protect, stifling the rights of those you are sworn to protect, lying our country into a war we should never have started, and sending you on a fool's errand while placing you in harm's way.

Yeah, where's the profit in that?
The "Peace Dividend" is for SUCKERS. Socialist MF-ing SUCKERS.

War! Huah!!! What is it goooood for! Absolutely Nothin'! Say it again.

:)

I am by no means a pacifist. I believe in having a strong military as a deterrent to those who might decide to harm us. But I am not a war hawk. Or at least I am not for boots on the ground.

I have no problem using a cruise missiles, etc to correct the miscreants of the world who oppose the US. But my preference is covert activity in the shadows. I am not opposed to water boarding. The only problem I see with it is that it is too little. When it comes to international threats... I am all for doing whatever it takes... in the shadows.

Really not expressing any opinion here. Just made me think of this ole Country Joe McD protest tune. Man am I gettin old.

Very nicely said. That's the closest I'll come to an opinion

Actually, I think that's the attitude of most military. In 20+ years in the Air Force, I never met a single airman who wanted to go to war. Well, there was one guy, but he met a MEB for being nutso. But neither did I meet a single airman who didn't go all out when called to duty. The military just does its duty; decisions on going to war are left to civilians.
