heh heh heh - looks like my really cheap/frugal days are behind me, although I'd like to think I could honk back on shelter expenses if I really had to..

~1000 sf w/ basement and attached 1 car garage.

Will be higher for 2008, mainly because of natural gas (heating cooking hot water).

I wanted to ask Want2retire what are your home taxes are there in the big easy. We have about the same size home in Missouri for $1700 a year in taxes.

Our taxes went down after Katrina, temporarily, to let people get back on their feet. Next year, they are going back up to where they were. So last year, property taxes were $541 (or was it $551? $451? I don't have my spreadsheet over here at Frank's house). Anyway, about $45/mo. Next year I am expecting them to go back up to $950, about $79/mo. My house is assessed at $16K ($160K assumed value, my purchase price in 2002).

Since I am planning to retire in Springfield, Missouri, naturally I looked into taxes and insurance on homes several years ago. In general, in comparing Springfield to New Orleans, property taxes are higher in Missouri and homeowners' insurance is higher in New Orleans, by about the same amount.

I was also wondering how you get taxes , electric , water & sewer , cable & phone and home insurance for that price . I'm moving there . Even when I had a much smaller house in Florida my expenses were more than that .

1250 sq foot house, mortgage free. Altogether approximately $250 per month.

Rental House (w/carport)
1210 SQ FT

$545 Rent/mo inc. maint.
60 Gas/mo
100 Elect/mo
-0- Water/Sewer/Gargage (Paid)
145 Renter's Insurance ($75K coverage) annual
180 Cable & Internet (all premium Channels)/mo
20 Phone (Land Line only- excludes Cell Phone Serv.)/mo

~$10,765/yr. ($897/mo)

paid-for one bedroom apt in NYC - Maint 600/mo which includes RE taxes.

Phone, electric - another 50 ?

ta,
mews

Tax: 350
Gas: 40
Electric: 50
Water/sewer: 30
Oil: 200 gal/yr (this year likely around 65 a month)
Phone/DSL: 50
Insurance: 100

Total per month: 685

Repairs and upgrades on this 1200 sf, 120 yo house eats up a good bit, I figure:

Maintenance: 500 (comes in big chunks, this year 10k roof)

Still cheaper than renting around here but no mortgage...with opportunity cost figured or a note, renting would be a no brainer but we're kinda fond of the place.

Roughly $325/mo for a 1,100 sq foot 1965 brick house. Nothing fancy and not worth a lot, but a house I will inherit from my aunt. She lives with my mom and this works for now.:)
