was made for this road

top down, windows up, heat on, wearing a heavy long-sleeved shirt and my gym gloves, 60 miles an hour without any pedal to the metal, coasting downhill and around curves, powering up the next mountain, what fun!

just out of season, most of the mountain roads all to myself, your own personal 400-mile long roller coaster
img_745365_3_a1bf16761fab134eba6c5ac356b81dda.jpg

the colors were amazing. from peak autumn at lower elevations to bare branches at the highest peaks, the season passes under the tires with every turn, with the smile or the sadness of each mountain face, from the south at the smokies in cherokee nc north to virginia at front royal. north south east west high low the dimensions are only challanged by the variety of hues, each more breathtaking than the next so that by the time you've finished a day's drive you have suffocated all of your troubles in sheer beauty.

at the top of the mountains you look down into bowls of fruit loops. and then you drive up a road while alongside you rises an adjacent mountain covered in skittles. the clouds cast playful shadows on distant mountaintops while the sun highlights the edges of ancient weather-rounded ridges

there are many viewing areas and even though there is already too much to take in, it is somehow frustrating that some of the great views have no safe place to stop. so sometimes i'd stop off the road up a bit where i could and take my chance backtrack hiking the shoulders. some viewing areas have information about the roadbuilding or the view.

some vantage points offer views of two seasons at once, where the trees are bare but turn your head and they bloom before your eyes

the colors and the depth and the views and the mountains seem vast and endless

for days you are surrounded in this beauty, in front of you, along side you and behind you

while not many, there are access roads on and off the parkway. near many at the bottoms of mountains, gates control traffic for when the parkway becomes too dangerous to travel

i stopped for lunch at a lodge at the top of one of the mountains. good food, great service, quaint seating

at one very and cold mountaintop, i stopped and walked over to the
frozen cliff face which was alive with the sound of ice cracking and water dripping and refreezing into icicles and autumn pops. frozen color. glass covered grass. just amazing

anyway, you get the idea. this is the perfect roadtrip for the early retiree. this year i timed it perfectly by accident. right after season so hotels were half-priced, few cars on the road, yet autumn was peaking. here's some more pictures of this amazing drive

wow - the last time i saw that i was 19 years old. me and my cat (her attitude was :rant:let me out of this car!) in my gold and black 67 Dodge dart on the way to Florida for the summer. nice memory sparker! TY :D

Beautiful!

I think that critter is some sort of Scottish cattle breed.

Lazy, you should know better than doubt the forum's gizzard squeezing expert. Go to Google Images and search on Scottish Highland Cattle...

Great pics Lazy. I drove through years ago, great scenes, but it was summer, no fall colors.

Realized the other day that you hadn't posted in a while, then I saw your post talking of a trip. Glad it went well for you.

Opportunities like this don't come along every day. The list of possible responses is almost endless. However, I'll show some rare self-restraint and simply punt...

Actually, I could do worse than my avatar, Svejk. Just a basic little guy who didn't want to get involved in a pointless war and was happiest in the pub.

Great photos! We traveled a portion of the Parkway in August a few years ago. Seeing the fall colors makes me want to go back.

Nice pics, Lazy. I was out on the Skyline Drive last week, but no pics. It's the route I take to get to my Mom's house. It's been a beautiful fall this year. Better colors than I've seen in a long time.

Just one question. How did you manage 60 mph? Every time I get over 50 or so a ranger pops me with a speeding ticket.

Beautiful pictures, Lazy--and I loved your description of driving in the convertible, too. Thanks for letting us see them.

you're quite welcome. whenever i go north most of the trip becomes a memory sparkler. the colors, the crisp air, the old houses, the food. oh,the food. i even found pizza that reminded me of the slice i grew up with. for future reference, it is Bleecker Street Pizza-Home. so good that i then went wondering through town but with all the diagonal streets, i thought i was headed east but somehow circled around and wound up right back at bleeker street pizza. so i had another slice.

oh, i don't think sheepdogs have gizzards. that would be a bird dog.

Great pictures. Enjoy the clouds on the blue sky.

had gorgeous skies most days. with the top down i was so surrounded by the environment that it could only have been better on a motorcycle. though i saw only two the whole trip and boy did those guys look cold (even i had to put the top up a few times when it started snowing inside).

Great pics Lazy. I drove through years ago, great scenes, but it was summer, no fall colors...Glad it went well for you.

thanx erd. went very well. great trip. i've done the smokey mountains in summer and that has its own magic too. of course, autumn there puts so much color right in your face it is actually a little overwelming at times.

last year i tried to do the southern part of blue ridge pkwy (cherokee to asheville) in summer but i was there during bad weather and wound up driving through clouds. fun at first but too stressful and probably pretty dangerous. finally got to do that leg this year. that's the most amazing section as it goes over 7k ft high (highest section of pkwy). the views there are spectacular.

Great photos! We traveled a portion of the Parkway in August a few years ago. Seeing the fall colors makes me want to go back.

thanx hankster. i did the section between asheville and boone before and that section happened to be closed this year so i did the rest including skyline drive. i also will definitely do this trip again.

wow, that's some pricey yet pretty road to mom's house, well worth the cost, of course. actually i didn't speed on skyline, just on the parkway section and just in very rural areas of that rural area when there were no other cars or sideroads around (of course you really only know that after you round the bend). the car hit 60 a few times coming down the hills. i had to power into the turns. fun fun fun.

i didn't speed much at all on skyline because i'd heard of the patrols there but especially because there was so much wildlife which i did not see on the parkway. i must have passed two dozen deer and they come right up to the road. one young buck came very close to my car after i had stopped to watch him sparing with his brother. they are very beautiful and i would have felt terrible if i'd hit one (though i realize i could have just bagged it up and sold it to one of you guys as a snack).

Beautiful pictures, Lazy--and I loved your description of driving in the convertible, too. Thanks for letting us see them.

thanx best. people have told me that they think i'm nuts to have the top down when it's so cold or that i'm showing off or some such nonsense but i absolutely love the feel of it. there is no better way to experience driving in general and this type of roadtrip in particular.

As always...thanks for sharing....

my pleasure. this really is the type of trip that if you don't take it since you can, well, you might as well just go back to work.

.......

here is that frozen autumn picture again. it looks so good on my puter that i wanted to try to enlarge it for forum...

ah, better. isn't that just beautiful.

I used to go to a really excellent hole-in-the-wall pizza joint in the Village when we went to NYC a few times a year. It was the old 'Joe's Pizza' that was about mid-block on Carmine St., between Bleecker & 6th Ave.....actually only 1 or 2 doors over from 6th Ave. I thought that I'd read somewhere that they closed sometime ago. There is a "Famous Joe's Pizza" on the corner of Bleecker & Carmine, but it's a different Joe....Joe Pasquale....don't recall the last name of the Joe who owned the old "Joe's Pizza". The old joint had some of the best NY pizza I ever ingested! They also had a thing that was like a knot made of pizza dough with hot Italian sausage wrapped up in it then baked! YUM!

I'm hoping to go back out there and go exploring next year. INYC!!! :smitten:

Lazy, really enjoyed your pics. Reminded me so much of the time we spent in Roanoke, VA. We lived there about 9 months. Awesome. Loved it there. So beautiful. I would drive into work and see the mountains every day - they are beautiful in winter too - glimmering white - almost makes you a little snowblind at times!

So glad we had our time there. Yes, a great place to see!

thanx for the pizza info goonie. ya know, if only i could find good pizza in florida i probably wouldn't even mind the hurricanes.

i stayed just an overnight in roanoke but got in late and left early to continue enjoying the parkway so i didn't get to see town. i did like how you see the mountains from there. that's where the parkway was sort of the least attractive of the entire trip. it's more farms and deep woods than moutainsides and fabulous views. also service roads ride right alongside the parkway, destroying the illusion a bit. but i think that's about where i got the picture of that sheepdog. so that was cool.

if you have't done this yet, a must see is St Patrick's Cathedral. it is a taste of old world European architecture that will take your breath away.
it is one of my earliest childhood memories.
