Joni Mitchell is in a coma

She's unconscious and unable to care for herself or make medical decisions. A long time friend is seeking to be named conservator because she doesn't have any family to do it for her. Very sad news. And she's only 72, I think.

This is sad news for me. I was just listening to Shadows and Light a couple of days ago. I was in love with her and her voice back in my formative years. I also just read an autobiography by Graham Nash, and he talked about her a lot. She was everybody's sweetheart.

That is odd Harley. I got in a Joni Mitchell mood last week and listened to everything I could find on Amazon Prime. What an angelic voice she had. Her story about not being at Woodstock so she could be on the Dick Cavett show was always so interesting to me. I hope she's there right now. God Speed Joni Mitchell.

One of my all time favorite albums is Blue. I had the pleasure of seeing her once. She was walking around a large music store in Hollywood with a shopping basket in her hand. Silly as it sounds, it didn't occur to me that someone like Joni Mitchell would actually do something as mundane as walking round a store carrying a shopping basket (although an employee told me that Bob Dylan had done the same thing there also!)

I wish her well.

So, going to wiki I saw many many folks have done a cover of that song (probably most famous, Judy Collins). But among others is Leonard Nimoy (yes, Spock). His version is terrific. If you are curious, give that a listen.

I got into Joni's music much later, in the 1990s, with the Turbulent Indigo album. That superb collection features a low, sultry, reflective voice; I was surprised to learn that her early voice/range was much higher. (I trust the cigarettes have something to do with that.)

But the killer Joni performance, for me, is the one below. (An interesting comparison to the version linked by easysurfer above.) It exudes the message that she's been through a lot, and is a survivor. Hope she pulls through.

Really good album. I love the song "How Do You Stop". When the album came out, that was the one I kept playing over and over again.

Sad to hear . She is one of the greatest influential artists of all time in my opinion. I love Led Zeppelin, and especially the song "Going to California". Always liked that part of it was about her: “They say she plays guitar and cries and sings . . . la la la la”.

To give Kramer the benefit of the doubt, even though Joni Mitchell is a legend in folk and pop music, perhaps he doesn't really follow folk and pop.


On the other hand, it is nice, as some generation Y folks are saying, how nice it is that Kanye West is helping this guy named Paul McCartney, promoting his career by recording a duet with him

Pavarotti died at just 71, and Leonard Nimoy at 83. For those intent on building PF's designed to last to age 100 based on "medical advances", there is such a thing as over engineering.

Well said! Many examples of that. Most people past 85 or so are just as happy wherever they are. New gadgets, travel, etc. has little impact on them. Have been trying all day to motivate 79 year old MIL to sit outside in the sun for a few minutes. The couch is apparently more comfortable.

I'm sure there are plenty of reasons to have never heard of her, but I would assume age to be the most likely.

I remember talking to younger (21-ish) coworker in the mid-80s, and somehow Paul McCartney's name came up. She said "Oh yeah, that guy who used to be in Wings".

Agreed, but it's not always the case. I used to work in a record store in Hollywood and remember the day a middle-aged gentleman came up to me and asked if we had anything by "Bob Die-lan". That's how he pronounced it. I wondered how any Westerner his age could have gone his while life without once having heard someone say the name Bob Dylan.

You brought back a memory, but I was very young. . .maybe still in elementary school or early highschool? I asked a friend whether she had every heard of "Bobby Die-lan" and was immediately hooted off the playground for my ignorance. I remember nearly dying of teenage shame.

As to Joni Mitchell she was HUGE in the 70s when I was a student. Hard to think that anyone who was conscious during that period (some weren't, of course. . .) didn't know the name.

Before we were married Ms G and I went to see Joni at the Merriweather Post Pavillion in Columbia MD. Ms G is a big fan of Joni, of course we didn't go together she went with her GF's, and I went with mine. We still don't talk about that or the day we ran into each other at the Preakness with other people.
