Share songs that make you melancholy, remember a lost love, or just touch a special place in your heart. For me, this is the granddaddy of them all.

YouTube - Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah

Barber's Adagio for Strings in B minor is the all-time most sorrowful music ever composed. It is in a minor key (the B minor key is supposedly emblematic of passive suffering), has a slow tempo, long held notes for the strings and no resolution to the musical tension. When I hear it, I want to curl up on the floor and just sob. For those popular culture fans, it is the music playing in the movie Platoon when Sgt. Elias (William Dafoe) is left behind by the helicopters and killed.

Mine is an obscure choice, by the cajun band Beausoleil. (Obscure even for me. I own one cajun music CD, and listen to it rarely.)

From the liner notes:
"Donnez-Moi Pauline" ("Give Me Pauline"), a slow, funereal waltz that also comes from the playing of Dennis McGee. Michael's vocals and lyrics on this song are nothing short of amazing, as he brilliantly and agonizingly conveys the sorrow of a man grieving after the death of his love, who's been "in the ground only three days." Several years ago, I had this album playing in my house when a friend came over. This song started, and he just stood there in the middle of the room listening intently. After the song ended, he shook his head and, even though he had no French and couldn't understand the lyrics, said "That's the saddest song I've ever heard." When you hear it, you'll probably think so too.
There is no youtube video and most mp3 samples only play long enough to hear the fiddle intro. The sample on this page has both the fiddle and a short verse with Michael Doucet's heartbreaking singing:

Gumby:

How about Adagio in G minor by Albinoni?

I do not know how to post YouTube, so perhaps you can add it to your list?
