Florida in February

Thanks, guys. I thought you guys were laughing at me. I really do have a morbid fear for cockroaches. I researched palmetto bugs: yahoo labelled them Florida's state birds. The two times I was in Florida, not during the warmer times of the year , I was staying in pretty nice hotels in Coral Gables and Naples for 2 or 3 days and never encountered any bugs problem. The thought of those bugs, especially flying cockroaches, killed all budding ideas I have about Florida. Flying cockroaches sound scarier than birds, and if Hitchcock is still alive, he can make another horror classic, one I would never go see.

After 20+ years of living there 6mo./yr.
Neighbor has pest control, regularly... $300/yr.
I buy Spectracide spray from Lowes, $7 and do a 5 minute spray around the edges, once every 3 months. Supposed to be only once every 6 months, but am super cautious.

When we come back each year, pick up 1 or 2 of the little critters, lying on their back in the middle of the living room carpet. Sometimes none. Otherwise, we see none. No special sealing or laying down of boric acid etc. The few snakes take care of the anoles, when they get over abundant.

As for the rest... the love bugs don't come every year, and it's usually a short stay. Fire ants only a problem for barefoot grass walkers. MIdges are the only nuisances that cause a problem, but that's only after a long wet season, and they only live for a day... (blind mosquitoes that don't bite).

It is spiders and snakes for me, bondi, so I understand. They were there, but you can stay out of their way. We were sort of out in the country. Coral Gables and Naples may be cleaner. Your mileage may vary.

Taking a trip across the bay at top speed, (sun and sea) got rid of the last of the winter depression.

That was a "wade in" picnic from boat to beach.

Crap, I'll try again tomorow.
Whatever happened to drag and drop?

Welcome back, Khan! Would love to see a photo or two of your vacation, which sounds as though it was great. Where did you go in Florida?

Now THAT is the kind of smile I love to see! :D Glad you found some warmth and sunshine....

You're making me want to go back to Florida. It's been a long time..

Add a new one to the list. I have been visiting an area near Venice, FL for six years now in late Feb early March. Usually very nice but this year red tide so no fishing and being near the beach causes one to cough a lot. The locals say this does not occur very often, at least five years in between but can last a month or two. The weather is good however and of cource the local restaurants are excellent.

Just got back from Sarasota. Spent all glorious 28 days exploring beaches, museums, restaurants, etc. What a wonderful place. Thanks to you all you locals for keeping me out of the tourist traps. DW and I had a great time. Need to plan 2/2014!

Great picture, Khan. Looks like you had perfect weather.

Will take another trip to FL in April.
