Explosion at Boston Marathon.....

I think I read a post a couple days ago about someone on here running in the Boston marathon. Anyone know who that was and if they're ok?

How dreadful! :( The live news feed that Janet linked to, just said that two more explosive devices were found and dismantled before they could explode, too.

Tragic act(s) of cowardice.
Now news services reporting 2 more (thankfully) UNexploded devices in area, and possibly another explosion in Dorchester, MA. Horrible situation that's still unfolding.

I just looked online and found out that Dorchester is in the south Boston area, I guess (for those of us who, like me, are completely unfamiliar with Boston). Maybe 5 miles south of downtown?

Now reporting at least 2 deaths & >20 injuries.
So, so sad.

Now heard of an explosion at the JFK library. Maybe that is in Dorchester?

The explosions were near Copley Square which is in downtown Boston . This is a very popular tourist area .

I know the area well, and have been at the finish line in the past as a spectator. The fact that only 2 are reported dead is, well, it could have been a lot worse.

Very sad to see this on the news. Also makes me angry at the same time.

I am hoping for good security at the Peachtree Road Race this year. My wife & I will be running there - with 60,000 runners.

I hope it turns out to be a home-grown nut.
I'm not sure why that would be better.
Police reportedly have a suspect. These initial leads often prove incorrect.

Authorities ID suspect as Saudi national in marathon bombings, under guard at Boston hospital - NYPOST.com.

The networks reportedly plan to expand their news shows tonight to an hour. It'll be 60 minutes of rehashed videos, gratuitous "I was there" interviews, and speculation. We'll know a lot more in days or weeks.

I wish we could get them to cover a less sensational story with as much fervor. The debt, government spending, education, US competitiveness, etc.

No one else is reporting that that I can find so far. All I found is that apparently the NY Post has a less than stellar journalistic reputation.
That is true. London Daily Mail, Huff Po, and Fox News are carrying the story this way, but all appear to be turns of the NYP original reporting.

I have at least two friends that were there. One watching one running. The guy that was watching, had his wife and daughter were knocked of their feet by the second explosion.

I think things like Facebook/tweeter amplify the media's tendency to cover stories like this more sensationally.

Checking in, fine physically, mentally shaken. More tomorow or weds

I came back home early to watch the news. This is so sad. All of us are Bostonians today.

The sentiment is appreciated by those of us born there, Ob, but it's important to note that the marathon is such an international event that this is an affront to all of us. I wouldn't be surprised if all of the casualties turn out to be from everywhere but Boston. Targeting innocent civilians is wrong. Period.

Maybe, but you will have to admit that bombs, possible terrorism, deaths and limbs flying past people's heads catches one's attention. The other things is that those topics you mentioned must always be covered under pressure of PC. Mangled bodies flying around can just be described in normal words.

Ha

After so many early stories of these terrible incidents turn out to be wrong, we may not know the real story for some time.

And- So glad to read you're OK RunningBum. Don't know if you finished before the mayhem, but congrats anyway to BQ. I've run a few marathons, but today DW says she's really glad I'm not BQ material.
