What was Your Workout Today?

Today was day 6 of physical therapy on the repaired shoulder. Still hurts like all get out :(

As hard as it seems, keep going. Make sure your PT knows how you feel. Their job is to push you to get well. I've had one time when the PT realized, the treatment was too much at that time, (I was doing that exercise 2 weeks later).

Folks in PT deserve a tremendous amout of respect from many, very few others understand the dedication required.

Best wishes, for a speedy recovery.

Thank you for the kind words. I'll try to keep on, keeping on.

...and don't get discouraged if it is taking longer than you expected to rehab the shoulder. It can be a long, painful, frustrating road back from rotator cuff surgery. Just keep at it... you'll get there! I had my shoulder done a few years ago. During PT I thought my shoulder would never regain flexibility and strength. But eventually it did, and life is so much better now!

Thanks Scrinch. That is good to hear. PT #8 coming up tomorrow, hopefully I'll start showing signs of flexibility returning. I know I'll never pitch in the big leagues but it will be nice to be able to sleep through the night again :)

Tore my cuff as a teen playing baseball. Arm was in a sling for several months, but never had surgery. Tried pitching a few years later and it was a no go. The shoulder is so complex, and its amazing at what these surgeries can do today. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Most of my 14 year nursing career was spent in orthopedics. IMO the physical therapy after shoulder surgery is as important or in many cases more important than the actual surgery. PTs are accustomed to patients who do not want to work very hard. You should tell your PT, and then show them through your very enthusiastic hard work that you are willing to do the work to get maximum benefit from PT. If you are lazy or let the pain and discomfort stop you from doing aggressive physical therapy you will have less range of motion and less strength in the shoulder in the end. Do not worry that you are working too hard at it. Your PT will tell you to slow down if you push too hard.

Rotator cuff problems are so excruciatingly painful. My sympathies to those who are fighting to recover from them! I wish you all the luck and a nicely functioning and pain free shoulder eventually.

I think I might tile-print this as a poster, and put it up by the Bowflex machine:

The typical man loses 3.5 pounds of muscle each decade after age 27. It looks like Arnie has lost a whole lot more than that.

Decided my daily high intensity cardio isn't probably necessary at the same level anymore. Dropped from 188 to 166 lbs. so I'm nicely in my healthy zone (I'm just under 6'). Started to shift to shorter cardio with abs workout every other day (about 30 minutes), alternating with a strength training routine using mostly dumbbells. One day off per week for recovery and maybe a cheeseburger.

Nobody stays young forever, but I'll bet Arnold S. is still a whole lot stronger than most men his age.

As for me, I am still doing the same weightlifting workouts as always at the gym, plus a little time on the seated elliptical again today.

Congratulations on the cardio workout results. I think your plan to switch to less cardio and more strength training now is good.

Thanks- this is all pretty experimental at this point. But it seems like things are on the right track.

Experimental is just the right word to describe my workout efforts. I was chubby and used P90X to get rid of 30 pounds of fat. Along the way I got much stronger and seemed to VERY slowly be gaining muscle mass. I switched from P90X to Body Beast. The muscle and strength gain has been faster using Body Beast but my results are still pretty pathetic compared to results that many young people get on this program. Weight loss is pretty easy, even after age 60. Building muscle, especially for an older person takes hard work.

I've been going to the gym twice a week for sessions with a personal trainer. Since the beginning of the year, I've also been doing interval running sessions once or twice per week. Since doing so, I've shaved a couple minutes off my 5k time, and ran my first race ever last weekend. In my first race, I finished in the 30th percentile, and I took 3rd place in my age division, having expected to come in around 5th place. What a confidence builder. I'm hoping to race again next Saturday.

Doing a little hiking and walking, but a lot of yard work over the past several weeks. Trying to get over 10,000 steps on my fitbit daily. Doing Bowflex workouts 3-4 times a week. Yesterday spent 4 hours with a wheelbarrow moving loads of dirt and retaining wall blocks. Lost 6 pounds since I retired 6 weeks ago.

This is an area where I'm really looking forward to kicking it up a notch now that I'm retired. My last day at work was Friday. I left early and did an 18-mile bike ride after lunch. Yesterday I did 14 and I've got a sprint triathlon next Sunday (1/2 mile lake swim, 12 miles on the bike plus a 5K). I've been averaging an hour of cardio a day during the week, 1.5 on the weekends, but now I plan to add weight training.

Interesting that people brought up shoulder issues- I developed a "frozen shoulder" a few months ago- probably a combination of stress at work and almost 40 years of desk work. With gentle exercise I'm slowly breaking up the scar tissue and my range of motion is increasing. (Basically, reaching behind me with my right arm has been very painful.) What a relief that it's finally getting better.
