How do you keep your fitness up in retirement during extended trips?

In the absence of good hiking trails, I will seek out an area with a set of stairs that are not too heavily used. Some parks have stairways that are good for a workout. I don’t run them anymore, but repeated, brisk walks up and down them provide all the exercise my 62 year old body needs :whistling:

New habits that are likely permanent

I’ve started taking long walks daily and plan to continue for as long as I can. Aside from the physical exercise, it’s just good for my mental outlook. I’m more optimistic when I get away from the news cycle and just enjoy nature. Also, we realized we have a lot more money now since dining out...

    Reintroduction time

Hi All, I’ve been a member for quite some time, but haven’t posted for awhile. The reason for this is: I retired October 2017 and have been running around doing all sorts of cool retirement stuff  I had more time to participate in the forum when I was chained to a desk  But...

    retirement party playlist? goodbye song?

I like this little clip from BTO's classic Takin' Care of Business: People see you having fun just a-lying in the sun Tell them that you like it this way It's the work that we avoid, and we're all self-employed We love to work at nothing all day

    I have Numbers Fatigue

Agreed. Even my limited Excel skills enabled me to build some awesome retirement planning spreadsheets. It's fun to plug in different variables, hit enter and watch all the numbers change.

Low sugar Breakfast always a challenge

My go to breakfast is a cheese omelet with uncured ham or uncured :baconflag: and coffee with some splenda and heavy cream. Sometimes I plop a fried egg on top of the omelet (I know...I'm kinda )

Poll:Is SS a critical part of your retirement plan?

I like the practice (learned on this forum) of having 3 versions of a retirement budget, which goes something like this: 1. Optimal 2. Reduced 3. Austerity We could live with the 25% haircut but lifestyle would suffer: 1. Full SS - Rib eye steak and winters in a warm climate 2. 25% haircut -...

Spending time outside as we age

I've always been an outdoor person. I'll sit outside in very hot weather and let a sprinkler spray my legs while I sit in the shade. I also go out in very cold weather and hike to stay warm or sit by an outdoor fireplace or patio heater. Too much time indoors makes me feel imprisoned, especially...

    The great napping poll

As a long time shift worker, napping has been a coping mechanism to make up for the almost constant state of sleep deprivation. Lately I've found that I really hit a wall in the evening, even when I'm on vacation, if I don't get a nap in earlier in the day. I suspect that my love of naps will...

Poll:What was (is) your planned monthly spend rate?

Our planned after tax spending for retirement will be about $5700/month which includes retiree medical premiums. These premiums should decrease at age 65 when Medicare becomes primary and retiree medical becomes a supplemental policy. Also, mortgage will be paid off about the same time, a...
