What kind of stock/bond mix you looking at in retirement?

Retired last year at 59. 80% Index Funds, 18% Gold ETF, 2% Cash. Lost money in bond-heavy Wellesley a couple years ago, so reallocated that portion into Gold which has been a good move. I don’t know enough about individual bonds to be comfortable in that market. My experience with Wellesley...

    Potential Property Tax Freeze- WWYD?

Congrats Congratulations to the OP on their good fortune. Lock it in! I’m in Texas, and my assessed home value was increased 94% last year. We protested and lost. We’re going to pay for an independent appraisal and see if we have better luck next year… The school districts here are...

    Gold as an investment

I replaced that portion of my AA that previously was allocated to bonds with a gold ETF. I would not invest in physical gold, though.

Poll on Worst Drivers by Automobile Manufacturer

From Driver’s Perspective Something interesting that I’ve noticed: when I was driving my Volkswagen other drivers seemed fairly polite. People would readily let me merge or would let me in during heavy traffic. Recently we bought a BMW. We don’t see the same degree of goodwill on the road...

Be Careful Inserting your CC. Wild story!

Sue Walgreen’s. That’s the ONLY way you’ll get their attention and hopefully prevent this sort of thing from happening to someone else.

    Introvert Extrovert

Hard core INTJ here. Meaning I’m pretty much maxed in the respective categories. HR gave us the Myers-Briggs at my former employer. They chose several peoples results as examples to discuss in front of a group of several hundred. The very last one discussed was mine, which the giggly...

    Pssst! What else?

How is it possible that Wellesley has a 5 star rating...? That makes me doubt the veracity of the ratings. Instead of "Pssst! Wellesley!", it should be "Wellesley...? Pfffft!".

    Class of 2023

I’m in. Originally planned on retiring last year, but MegaCorp announced plans to “reduce their footprint” in the coming year, so I decided to go OMY. Over the past year MegaCorp had one wave of WFR’s after another, but always missed me. I suspected that I could get a severance, but in case...

    Sanity Check on AA

I'm 59, have $1.4M in IRA's and 401k's, along with about a year's worth of cash to cover living expenses. Wife is retired, and I plan to retire in 6 months. Historically I've invested in Index Funds/ETF's. VTI and QQQ primarily. I'm now moving towards a more defensive posture in the interest...

    Hobbies

Aviation. Build your own airplane. I did it. Built it in my garage. You can too. It’s a lot of fun, and you’ll meet some incredible people… https://www.eaa.org/eaa https://zenithair.net/ - Pat

Advantage of keeping SOME money in old 401k...?

I'll be 59.5 shortly, and am considering rolling my 401k funds (with my current employer) into an IRA. I plan to retire in less than a year (I live in Texas). Question: Is there any advantage to keeping SOME money in the 401k...? As long as the 401k account exists, can I ever transfer money...

Lead from gasoline blunted the IQ of about half the U.S. population

I wonder if that explains some of the behavior seen in urban (ie, high gasoline consumption) areas. There does seem to be a lot of commonality across the larger cities.

Scheduled meeting with manager to announce....

3 months…? Good lord. My manager isn’t going to get 3 minutes from me.

Where to hide cash from the inflation?

I went to 20% GLD about 6 months ago, and about 35% into VWIAX (Vanguard Wellesley, which in hindsight has been a loser. My crystal ball was a bit cloudy on that one).

Does your retirement planning account for Social Security insolvency?

I assume that I will not see a dime of Social Security. If I do, great. But I'm not counting on it.
