    5 weeks Australia/New Zealand

Thanks so much for the article, and the trip report. We would not stay long in tourist areas, just not shoppers, and dislike crowds. Also planning to go off season which we always do.

Is $12,000 per year in travel enough

I think it depends on how long you want to be gone, and what you like to do. We budget 25K, but some of that (5K) is for a family vacation with all the kids/grands that we pay for 100%. The rest is for us - we like to be gone maybe 5 months or so in blocks. Sometimes we camp in our pop up...

    5 weeks Australia/New Zealand

OK thanks. We decided to add a week, so 3 and 3. I found a pretty good itinerary on line for 3 weeks in Australia. We will adapt it to our interests. We are on an 2 month road trip, but will start nailing all of this down when we get back.

East Coast trip in mid April, questions

Ellis Island is better for a real visit. You can get close to the statue of liberty, but there is not as much there to see/tour. Agree trains are good, easy, have wifi, etc. Freedom Trail in Boston is a must see.

    Ever Been to China?

I went for work a few times with days off to tour. We used a private tour guide recommended by the hotel. Spoke English, reasonably priced. I think $60 for the day?

    Year 2 retirement blues

I was bored and joined Meetup. From there I attended a few of the various meetups - two in particular dealt with wine tasting. I made a new friend, and then I did not feel so bored anymore. There are all kinds of meetups, it's a good way to try things. Hiking, hobbies movies, dinners out...

Blue Card WorldWide - travel health insurance

My husband called them this morning - they said if we go to a Cigna affiliated Urgent Care they will take the insurance. the ones where we are staying are packed though - 6 hour wait times. So he headed to another one out of network. They told us all we have to do is mail in the receipts and...

Blue Card WorldWide - travel health insurance

Yes, Tufts HMO. We did not think that would preclude us from seeing an Urgent Care and paying cash. But the two urgent cares in our area only took insurance, no cash. Basically we consider the insurance to be catastrophic only.

Have to say we were really impressed with the CVS Minute Clinic we used.

Blue Card WorldWide - travel health insurance

Good topic. Boy are we finding out about insurance issues, even here in the US. We have a plan out of Mass, but are on the west coast for a month or so. DH got a nasty case of bronchitis or pneumonia, and because he also has asthma we have to jump on that. Well, no Urgent Cares in this...

    5 weeks Australia/New Zealand

Great suggestions! Thanks. We travel light, it is our style. One small roller per person. So not worried about packing. We traveled this way through Italy and Spain, one pair of shoes. Of course we do not plan anything fancy/upscale. The most upscale we get is khakis and a clean shirt...

    5 weeks Australia/New Zealand

Since we will not go to Africa this year, we will go to AUS/NZ late fall. The plan is for 5 weeks. 2 weeks AUS, 3 weeks NZ. NZ is more our style. Anyone do this trip? Plan is to rent car, stay in hotels/B&B. Not into caravans as my husband is not mechanical. I realize we will likely...

    Anyone do an African tour?

Great news for us. My husband's friend, who lived in SA and ran safari tours for many years called us just to check up (he is living in Wales now)...and he asked if we would be interested in a trip/tour if he pulled one together. So we are all in for that. He is a great guy, super...

How far out do you plan vacations?

Thanks everyone! I used poor terminology. He wants to create a blue print so we have an idea of what is coming up, as we keep pushing things out. We would never make reservations or do too much detailed planning until we were within a year or so. I like the idea as he can be difficult to...

How far out do you plan vacations?

My husband wants to plan out 5 years (locations and budget)....just curious about others. Obviously things can change due to many factors but he wants a blue print of sorts. Not against this....

    VRBO or AirBnB

We have used both with no issues, I agree that lots of reviews on the exact property are important. I think fraud is widespread these days. A friend of ours stopped using these online services after a very bad experience and he now swears by using local real estate offices that carry rentals...

    ACA effect on retirement rates

i broke an arm a month ago. negotiated rate with the hospital was about 1500, no cast, just diagnosis plus xray, no meds. i paid a $500 er fee out of pocket. if i hadn't been over my 3K deductible, i would have had to pay the entire 1500. this was not a top tier hospital - just a small...

    ACA effect on retirement rates

costs are much lower in countries like spain, italy. a family friend was in italy and fell breaking her arm. she paid $240us for er which included xrays, pain meds and cast. she was shocked. would be 3/K here i bet. that is the reason for the rise in medical tourism.
