    Travel hopes for 2022

We are currently on the last leg of a three week road trip. We left our home in Canada in early March after cleaning up after a snowstorm, and drove down south to the Smokey Mountains and area for 10 days. Visiting our son in Michigan now and hope to be back home this weekend coming. Great to be...

Semi-FIRE: Anyone else slowing down but not stopping yet?

For over 25 years was CFO of several businesses that my partners and I were/are owners of. Now 53, I work one day at the office and 2-3 mornings a week from my home office having delegated all day to day duties. I also have reduced ownership as part of the deal for me to slow down. Reduced...

    Carryon Luggage Hassles

We travelled through Poland this summer and the Łódź flight we were on had a lower weight for carryon than Scandinavian Air or the Star Alliance partner that we were also on earlier that trip. We found this out the night before, planning to check the extra bag. The next morning at the airport...

How do you change your mindset?

I have been working part time for the last few years for a greatly reduced rate mostly to feel as though I am still part of something. More recently I have started some volunteer gigs which will soon take over. After 25 crazy years as a business owner it wasn’t difficult to see my partners...

Bike and Barge trip in Holland and Belgium

Badger, sounds very much like the bike and barge we took in May 18. Right down to the Gouda farm, Strawberries and Stroopwaffles! We were fortunate with fantastic weather. Good times.

Bike and Barge trip in Holland and Belgium

Spring of 2018 we did the Belgium to Holland bike and barge. Thanks to several people in this community we were well prepared for the tour. The big thing was weather, we were prepared for wet or dry weather, and as it turned out or week was warm and sunny, the previous group the week before...

When you have been around this forum for a long time ...

Although I do not view the forum each day, every time I will learn something new or be reminded of something. Great place. Six years ago this forum was a godsend. Although I ultimately decided to wo#k part time, the peace that you all brought to me is never forgotten. Cheers to al.

    How many children?

In my late 40’s my wife said that if she would do it again she would have had a third child or more. I felt and still feel responsible for perhaps pushing her more one way than another. She is fine with having the two we have and it is not a regret that she reflects on often, if at all. For me...

    How many children?

DW and I have 2 children born when we were about 28 and 31. DS is in graduate school and DD finished 2 year colleges and has started working full time. We talked ourselves out of having more, as my wife said at the time we only have 2 arms for two kids. Not sure what will happen regarding...

Should I close my business and sell off properties

When I sold off my portion of the longstanding family business I felt a lot of guilt as I was the last of the ‘family’ and had felt responsible to pass it along, profitably to the next generation. Eventually I realized that all the rest of my cousins and uncles had bailed over the years and...

What is the last thing you ordered from Amazon?

Ordered a Fuel Door Release kit from amazon/Dorman. The fuel door release beside the seat on my DD car has not worked for a while. After a little time spent on Youtube and $25 and the fuel door is as good as new. Now I won’t have to fill up her car for her by releasing the fuel door via the...

How to pay for Bruges bike and barge

Have not been on the forum for months now. Just as a follow up to this thread the Bike and Barge was awesome, if a little more taxing than we anticipated. As we are finally slowing down with work, and plan to travel more, I suppose I should look at a Europe credit card. Will update that...

Consumer Reports - Magazine vs. Online site

Online subscription only, and for many years. It has paid dividends with our car purchases so I kept the subscription alive. Have never had the paper magazine. Because I am Live in Canada?

    winners who quit after winning

We have moved over the decades from being 100% invested in my own company (yikes!) to more recently 60/40 equities/fixed. The past 6 or so months we have reduced down to 50/50 as more of a preservation outlook as opposed to growth. We feel we will need about a 2.5% withdrawal rate (ambiguity in...

Poll: Flu 2017/18 Season - Flu and Shot

We have the flu shots, but no flu yet (knock knock on wooden heads). I have asthma, so if the flu shot reduces my odds of getting influenza I will take it. I have had a viral infection though. Not fun, actually missed out on a family reunion because of it. DW still symptom free.
