    Wedding Gift when not invited?

Would not worry about it until maybe next April or May. If things are still on by then, perhaps bride-to-be will have registered gift preferences with some stores. Or otherwise made known gift preferences. If not, widely useable flexible gift card (such as Amazon) is good.

    Who considers themselves self sufficient

The closest I have come to self-sufficiency is financially. That is, I do not rely on employment for sufficient funds to be able to pay my bills. And if my government pension was ever kicked out from under me, I still have enough income stream from passive investments to fund myself. But in...

For those DIY'ers who invest mostly in individual stocks

I use Schwab's site tools for initial screening. I followup with data verification on candidate stocks at Yahoofinance, and at companies' own investor relations websites. I screen stocks in companies to gauge for profitability, financial strength, positive cash flow, dividend yield, and how...

Paid My House Off - No One Else to Tell

Congratulations Marky3130! You and your wife are entitled to celebrate, so let the festivities begin! You could do the Dave Ramsey radio show routine: Do a verbal countdown "3-2-1", then scream at the top of your lungs: "We're debt free!" Then, if you have some noisemakers and confetti...

    Poll:Workplace requirements

I am retired. I found no other answer for the question that would possibly fit me and all retired folks except "Other". There was no choice explicity labelled "Retired", or even any choice for "Not Applicable". So, it was "Other". I assumed at an early retirement forum, the deduction would...

    Smoke, but thankfully, no fire.

Learn something new every day. I guess retaining moisture may be an advantage, or perhaps save some cooking time. But not sure I would find enough advantages over just putting the potatoe on a plate (microwave safe), poking a few fork holes in the potatoe skin, and nuking for the required...

Mom in Ass't Living now wants to sell her house

As to transfer of house from Mom to daughter, it just occurred to me that the mechanics do not have to be hard or complicated. Just go to a title/escrow company for their services to prepare a warranty deed and get it properly recorded with the county at minimal expense.

Mom in Ass't Living now wants to sell her house

Life expectancy for females at age 108 is 1.44 years, or about 16 months. here are the tables: https://www.health.ny.gov/health_care/medicaid/publications/docs/gis/20ma08_att_i.pdf

Mom in Ass't Living now wants to sell her house

I would still suggest transfer of house from Mom to daughter be done with Warranty deed and NOT with quitclaim deed. Quitclaim deed could come back to haunt daughter if/when she ever might decide to sell the house. Here is what a Florida attorney firm says about warranty deed versus quitclaim...

Mom in Ass't Living now wants to sell her house

Taking your word at face value---"Mom wants daughter to have the house". If that is Mom's intent and desire, then all that's left is to facilitate the transfer. I do not think I would use quit claim deed, as that is (in my opinion) a less strong form of deed for a subsequent owner of real...

Separate car insurance policy for adult child?

Now that sounds like good advice. Wish I had thought of it while the kids were still in our household.

    Alternative investment suggestions

"Ironic" be my practice or not, I feel as though the quotes around a word or phrase gives some slight written emphasis that would be conveyed in person, perhaps by tone of voice, or volume of voice, or perhaps by body language or facial expressions. Now, whether my practice is unique to me, or...

    Changing Carry on Bag Size

When we took our trips to Europe, we both decided carryon luggage was the way to go for trips of three weeks total or less, after we had read and heard the nightmare stories of lost checked luggage or misdirected luggage. We both found Samsonite carryon hard shell cases that were within the 21"...

0% tax rate - Dividends and Capital Gains

Yes, I believe your tax would be $-0- on the entire $80,800. And I do not believe this is a "cliff" situation, where if you go just over the limit of $80,800, that you pay full tax rate on any LT cap gains or qualified dividends. That is, you would still benefit from $-0- tax rate on the first...

need to cut back on alcohol !

Except for an occasional one beer a year (St. Patricks Day when I can find corned beef and cabbage dinner somewhere), I don't drink. And it has now been probably seven or eight years since I have even had my one beer a year. One time at my annual physical I told my doctor this for probably the...

    Inheriting money in an IRA

I believe for multiple inheritances, some differences "might" occur based on dates of death of first (original) and second owners. If original owner died before 01/01/2020 one set of RMD rules would apply. If second owner died after 01/01/2020, because of Secure Act a different set of...

    How many own LTC insurance?

Hybrid LTC/whole Life solves those two problems. With the whole Life Insurance feature of hybrids, if you never use (or don't use all) the LTC benefits, your heirs get a multiple of your single premium as death benefit life insurance. Hence the premium you paid is "not" wasted" (if one looks...
