$471 two new pairs of glasses .. I’m sick of being ripped of

I paid about $1,000. Frameless and lenseless with lifetime guarantee.

I got my last pair from Eyebuydirect. They were ~$150 (progressive, highest index), and when I had insurance they were ~$225.

If you buy glasses online, how do you get them adjusted if they don't fit comfortably (too loose or too snug)?

I have figured out how to do it myself.

I buy the bendable memory titanium kind. The frame always fits well right out of the box. My first pair was a plastic frame I used for sunglasses. They were a little out of whack but just running hot water on the frame that needed bending solved the problem.

My wife just ordered her new glasses online at Zenni; very easy and WAY cheaper than going to the brick and mortar store. She paid ~$80 for loaded, nice looking progressives. The lenses had all the bells and whistles. I measured her pupillary distance with my 6” dial caliper. A metric ruler will do just fine as well, not difficult.

I have used Costco for a few years and been very pleased with their prices and service. I have glare free, tri-focal line free, UV protected, etc. We are at Costco at least once a week so I get adjustments and cleaning free each time. I have not bought their frames and used my old frames that are in good shape.

Besides I like doing shopping there and encourage others to do the same. (my Costco stock has more than tripled in the past 5 or 6 years so I like to see a busy store. I'm waiting for the stock to split. :D

Cheers!

We have used Costco but they are limited in their selection and the don't provide wrap around prescription sunglasses. The prices at Costco are better than optical retailers and they do take VSP directly. However, Costco's prices with the VSP benefits are often much higher than Glassesusa.com or Zennioptical.com which are my number 1 and 2 choices.

Costco WOULD NOT just put my new lenses in my old frames. They said they were too "brittle" and the lab would not do it. I think this was just an excuse to have to buy a new pair of glasses with new lenses.

As with Badger, my gal had new lenses put in her old frames at Costco last month, so it doesn't look like a storewide upsell dictum. Maybe that employee or may be brittle frames.

We use Costco too. Still not cheap, but they do replace them if they get scratched.
I went to ForEyes and the quote for two progressives (one regular, one sunglasses) was ridiculous IMO. So I told them no way, I'm going to Costco, and they said OK but come back and we'll beat their price. So I went to Costco and their price was about half what ForEyes had quoted, but the frame choices at Costco were awful (or I probably would have ordered from Costco). So I went back to ForEyes and they came very close to cutting their quote in half AND I got (much better) frames I much preferred. Why ForEyes plays games instead of showing you all their discounts while you're there is beyond me. However the service at ForEyes was FAR better than Costco optical. FWIW

I recently scratched my now 15 month old pres sunglasses and took them back to ForEyes to see if they could be repaired or replaced. They said they could not be repaired, and quoted me $453 to replace the lenses!!! About twice what I originally paid for frames and lenses. BUT they said we're running a special and you can have new glasses and lenses for $250, but you have to have a new eye test (about $60). I said I can live with the scratch...

My “main” pair of progressive lenses, that I wear daily, are from Costco. My computer glasses and Rx sunglasses are from Zenni. In my case, there wasn’t a big price difference.

While I’m all for saving money where possible, I’m not going to complain about spending a couple of hundred dollars on a pair of glasses that make it possible for me to see, every single day for a couple of years. Less than fifty cents a day to have good vision? That’s a bargain.

Not strictly true. I had 2 pairs one designer one regular. They (Costco) could not do the designer because they are manufactured for specific lenses and as you say were too brittle. The other they have done a few times. I think the Opticians sell these so THEY can force you to get new ones every year. Bother pairs were not cheap, just one was a Ray Ban. I will never buy that manufacturer again.

What I did, I found a pair frames from an on line retailer, happened to be Warby Parker. Ordered 5 pairs to try at no cost. Selected the ones I liked and took them to Costco to see if they could put lenses in them, They could, so I returned the 4 pairs I did not want. I called WP and they charged me for the ones I kept. I probably saved $200 vs a traditional seller.

BTW: I love Donna our Costco eye specialist, her service is bar none! She is at the Jacksonville, Fl. Costco.

The thread is why i did LASIK over a decade ago (~$3,000 though a local medical school clinic)

At that time I was severely nearsighted (over -8 in both eyes) & my glasses cost over $300/pair since I had to buy the highest-index lenses.

Now I can buy reading glasses - 3 pairs for ~$20 - from Costco.

They did put new lenses in frames for my friend not long ago. May depend on who is working there?

We have used Zenni for maybe 4-5 years. Quality is good and prices are GREAT! It really helps to have an existing pair that fit well to measure bridge, frame width, arm length to get close. It is a little extra work at first, but we went from $250-$400 per pair , to average $50 per pair for progressive bifocals with moderate bells and whistles. After 3 years of telling my RN sister about them, she went from $600 optical place to $50-$60 per pair and is thrilled. She has bought 5 pairs so far and loves them.
