Black Friday 2011...here we go again

Why is this not surprising?

LOS ANGELES -- A woman shot pepper spray to keep shoppers from merchandise she wanted during a Black Friday sale, and 20 people suffered minor injuries, authorities said.
The incident occurred shortly after 10:20 p.m. Thursday in a crowded Los Angeles-area Walmart as shoppers hungry for deals were let inside the store.
Police said the suspect shot the pepper spray when the coverings over the items she wanted were removed.

Well, I did get in, buy, and get out quickly at Menards. Of the 5 hours sale, I only stayed for about the first 30 minutes.

Did score a deal. Yet, I kept wondering who was fooling who?

The parking lot was packed by opening time (exactly what the store wanted of course). I kept thinking that the Black Friday stuff is like the casinos, they want customers to think of shooting for a jackpot deal, in the meantime the more folks come, the more the house wins.

I wonder if the place clears out as soon as the 5 hour deal is over.

I did ok. Kohl's gave me a raincheck on a doorbuster for an upright carpet steam cleaner, which they normally don't do. I scored a nice chair for my workbench at 50% off at Sears. I couldn't even get into Target, so I passed..........

All these places open on Thanksgiving, or at midnight or 4 AM or whatever today, just reminds me how much the business world is willing to crap on the American worker and prey on their desperation to work. Too bad if they don't want to work at ridiculous hours or be forced to spend time away from families when most places have traditionally closed for family time.

Well, back to Menard's. Time to return the $120 heater I bought the other day. Since I got another for $50 cheaper today. :)

Frasier: The other day I was asked out by this twenty-two year old girl that I met in a mall.
Niles: That is alarming.
Frasier: Well, I turned her down.
Niles: No, no, you were in a mall. Did anyone see you?

I didn't make it Menard's . DW had a coupon from ace. I went there, got 4 tubes of paintable caulk and found that the coupon was good for only sat and sun, and was for 50% off a single item up to $30. So I would have saved $2.50 if I waited until tomorrow to buy the caulk. I bought the caulk and left, but I may go back tomorrow if I can think of something I need.

I do not shop on Black Friday or any other day of the year. Since I appreciate how critical is to our national enconomy that citizens spend a lot of their money, I always encourage others to spend away.

I found a lot of the Black Friday deals are also available online. I avoided the lines and crowds and so far nothing on my list has been sold out. Plus I found a great double (triple?) bonus. If I buy a $100 gift card for a department store at my local supermarket, they give me $10 off my next grocery purchase. For a few days it was $15 but I missed that sale. Also, my $100 purchase gives me a $0.40 reduction in gasoline price for my next fillup, saves me about $7 - $8. Then I use the gift card to do some online shopping at 50% off or more buying doorbuster deals on stuff I was going to buy anyway. The store (Kohls) was giving $15 coupon for each $50 spent. Plus shipping was free. So my total haul was:

$100 worth of stuff (on great sale prices, would have cost me double any other day!)
$10 free groceries next time at the grocery
$7 gasoline discount next time I fill-up
$30 free anything I want at Kohls (or online) but have to shop next week

I don't see how this can be making much money for a retailer at these kinds of prices and incentives, but it was worth hassling with the web site on a specific day to get this kind of discount.

OK, so I wait every year for Black Friday when Bed Bath & Beyond gives you a coupon for 20% off your entire purchase. Always a good time to stock up on little things for the kitchen.

Also hit Barnes & Noble for the Nook Simple Touch. They have them behind the register. Nice little device, I think I'm hooked!

I had to drive by a mall containing a Best Buy, Lowes, and a few others. The lot was completely full and there was a small constellation of cars orbiting around the lot waiting for someone to leave.

I enjoy buying stuff at a bargain and getting a good deal on something, but I just can't imagine camping out all night (and apparently risking injury by aggro shoppers, if you're in CA) to save $100 on the new TV I didn't know I needed. I'm glad there are people out there that are addicted to shopping and accumulation of stuff, though because if everyone was like me (and many others posting here), this economy would never get going.

With all the pushing and shoving going on, maybe Black Friday should be renamed Black Eye Friday

I stayed up till 2am to buy a Silhouette Cameo, vinyl kit, and extra vinly...savings of $100 online. I can make some amazing crafts with this bad boy....even scan my art and have it cut it on vinly to apply to anything!

You better recheck the date on that Ace 50% off coupon, it's only good on Sat. Bring it to Menard and they'll honor the coupon from Ace (must be an actual print, not an internet coupon). Also, there's a Crafty Beaver coupon for 50% off for Sat. (on facebook) too and it's good for up to $50 max. value.

Thanks- I'll check it out. The coupon was emailed to DW and we printed to our printer that's out of colored ink - its barely legible. I'm not familiar with Crafty Beaver. Where are they located?

South of the border...in Chicago, IL (uptown, albany park and portage park areas) and Skokie, Il.

I had 3 of those Ace coupon and was able to get me some items for 50% off which was nice.
