check the "best before" date before using...

I cleaned out my fridge and cupboards today, throwing out old items. One was a box of pancake mix that I never opened. I guess I forgot about it since it had a "before before" date of Sept 07. I still was contemplating using it up since it had never been opened, but a quick google search shows this is one item you definitely should use before it's "best before" date:

Who knew? I guess this poses a risk only to those allergic to mold, but just the thought of it is nasty to me. Out in the trash it goes!

Just an FYI for anyone else who might have old pancake mix in their cupboards.

I did ginger bread from a mix last winter, it turned out more like a ginger bread pancake/brick. ICK.

DW chided me about my baking skills and I quizzed her about how long the mix was in the cupboard. She said, "I'll bet that came from your mom's".

We couldn't read the date on the box but my mom died in 04. Betty Crocker doesn't even make that style box anymore.

When in doubt, pitch it out.
