So, if someone is on medicaid and wants custodial care at home (not in nursing home), if a rich individual, or say a gofund me drive, goes "Here, I'll pay for the custodial care..."

Does that help impact medicaid eligibility? Or would it not especially since it's custodial care and not medical care. Don't know if someone paid for medical care would that impact anyhow.

If the money becomes an asset of the patient it may matter a lot. Talk to a well-versed eldercare attorney in the state of residence.

There is a kind of trust, called a "special needs trust" that is specifically designed to handle this problem. AFIK they are usually testamentary trusts but I don't see why they couldn't be set up at any time. If the patient at any time has control of the money, though, the deal probably blows up. The attorney will help with this. If he/she is not familiar with special needs trusts, you need a new attorney.
