Re: Just finished closing the deal on my new Lexus Ride!..............

I just bought a 2007 Camry LE 4 cylinder. So far so good. 23-24 mph around town with the a/c on. I haven't had it on a long highway run but expect 33-35 mph.
The car is very quite and comfortable and looks great in dark blue metallic paint.
I traded a 94 Buick Lesabre with 207,000 miles. The buick probably had another 100,000 miles in it but I was ready for a change.

Anyone bought a 2007 Camry? I like the new look. I can't afford a new Lexus or Avalon but a Camry without all the bells and whistles can be justified.

Great car.......:) I have an Accord and found out why the Big Three is getting spanked by the Japs...........

I bought 3 new GM cars in the past 20 years..........never again............. ;)

So is it the market run-up, or the new-car-flu, or what? Everybody seems to be dumping tens of thousands of $ into the economy now for a new ride. What happened to LBYM?? :D

I know he's not talking to me. :D Oh she's a beauty to me, but I might as well key "I'm frugal" on the side of my 07' Fit.

I seriously doubt you'll see that happen. Subaru's big thing besides the AWD is those boxer engines, and those just aren't going to work in a hybrid format. I'm not aware of a boxer diesel. Besides, performance is a big issue for subaru and "hybrid" and "performance" dont really go together (with the exception of, maybe, the honda accord hybrid).

I'd be surprised if it didn't happen, actually. Subaru has been coy about it, but they have been researching hybrids for years. When GM decided to puke up its stake in Subaru for cash last year, Toyota took the opportunity to buy part of that stake and take Subie on as a partner. Toyota got to use some spare capacity in Subie's US factory. Subie also contributed its battery technology, which was a lot more advanced than Toyota's. The Subaru hybrid research budget is now being used to work on clean diesels for the US market. I would be kind of surprised if Subaru didn't use some variant of Toyota's hybrid system in a vehicle within the next few years. It would be a perfect match for Subie's liberal, lesbian, eco-freak customer base in the US, and since their customers tend to be more affluent some extra cost probably wouldn't be a show-stopper.

Before the GM/Toyota thing came down the pike, Subaru also showed a turbo hybrid concept vehicle at an auto show that got good mileage and had amazing performance stats.

OK. I haven't followed their developments that closely. I was just going on their current approach, which is AWD, and performance. I was so close to getting an 06' WRX, but i just couldn't bring myself to do it. Given that my wife and I pool money, I thought it'd be too selfish of a thing to do since they cost so much more upfront as well as insurance/gas. I think when i get further along the FIRE path into my 40s, i'll be more apt to spend money more loosely.

The turbos are nice, but I can't see paying up up front, plus all the extra maintenance, requirement for premium fuel, higher insurance, etc. The plain old flat 4 has proven very reliable and does the job, so I can't be bothered with the more involved choice.

I agree; .... for now. I'd have to get to a point where i'm well past my financial goals before i'm going to splurge on a "want" like that.

Still driving 1989 Ford Festiva.

I own three (3) vehicles currently. Have way less than 20K tied up
in the bunch. The newest one is 8 years old.

For the five of us: two 8's and a 12-year-old. And no Lexi.

Re: Just finished closing the deal on my new Lexus Ride!..............

We usually keep our cars 10-12 years. The 07 Camry is the first new one we've bought since 1988. These Toyotas hold their value so well that I believe that you are better off buying new rather than a 2-3 yr old used vehicle. It is nice to treat yourself once in a while even while LMYM.

Wife had an 84 Subaru GL...........that thing would not die....... :D I thought back then they had horizontally oppsed cylinders? Maye I am wrong......

I have a couple neighbors that own Subarus, and they love them. The only concern I have about them is pretty poor gas mileage........what gives? I suppose the AWD sucks some mileage out, but NOONE that owns a Subrau brags about fuel economy......... :D

Re: Just finished closing the deal on my new Lexus Ride!..............

Hmmm, I get about 28MPG on the highway, 23 around town with a naturally aspirated 2003 Legacy Wagon. For a car that weighs almost as much as a Crown Vic, that's not too shabby. Since I spend most of my tie on the highway, I figure I am giving up 2 or 3MPG for AWD and more weight.

And yes, they still have horizontally opposed cylinders ("flat 4"). Only now Subie offers flat 6s and turbo-charged flat 4s. The most souped up turbo flat 4 generates 300HP (think "poor man's Porsche"). The owners magazine had an article about a rally race of some sort where the Subaru team managed to completely roll over the car, but still managed to come in 2nd overall.

also aka Boxer engine per my post above.

That's pretty good..........I do 50/50 driving on freeway and town. Blended gas mileage is 28-29 mpg.....straight highway is 34-35 mpg. It seems a little weird that the Civic gets the same mileage, and that GM is pushing their Aveo for gas mileage, and it's a manual, and gets the same highway MPG as my Accord......... :D :D

If mileage were the only consideration, I would still be driving my '95 Escort, which routinely got 40MPG on the highway.

Re: Just finished closing the deal on my new Lexus Ride!..............

I got 37 mpg on the highway with a 00 Chev Prism.

Safety for the darling daughter......... ;)

I also have a Chrysler Town and COuntry........don't want to talk about mileage on that, but it's a nice cruiser for long trips........and I got 25 going to South Dakota and back this summer with the AC on.........

I'm happy to have cars as my one major black hole for money. I'm lucky enough that I get a lease through work for a BMW 3 Series. I love the car, but I'm happy the lease is up soon so I can replace it with the new twin turbo 335i 8)

I also have my little summer toy for autoX and cruising.

Thankfully, my wife likes cheap cars

Re: Just finished closing the deal on my new Lexus Ride!..............

i got the bmw x3 and love it. out of all the cars i owned in my life i have to admit driving this one is an experience. the handling of a bmw is just so nice. if retirement wasnt so near i can see leasing an m3 just to experiance having one in my lifetime.

The kids haven't been in the subaru since we bought a mammoth Honda Odyssey last year. Yes, I also don't want to talk about that pig's fuel consumption. But since we drive it less than 10k miles a year, I am not as concerned about it.
