As a recreational sailor who dreads ocean storms, I've always wondered how deep the effects go. Do submarines feel the effects of bad storms, or do they travel deep enough that the surface doesn't affect them?

Unless the seas are really, really heavy, one does not generally feel them below 150 feet. Most of the time, it feels like you are sitting in your kitchen (with no windows, a nuclear plant and 120 of your closest friends). Unless the boat takes a big up angle or down angle, you have no sense of motion at all.

I used to work with a guy that served on an old diesel / electric sub in the Korean war era and I think he mentioned that they had to surface when it was stormy out, because if they had an emergency underwater it was more dangerous to surface in a storm. Now that I reread this, I'm wondering if I misunderstood him.
