Switching J*bs, seeking general advice and comments

The reason why employers pay through the date of resignation even if they escort you out is that no employee will give notice in the future. An "I resigned Friday" delivered on Monday means that their networks were vulnerable all weekend.

Congratulations on the j*b change and on your soon to be baby girl!

You handled the resignation well. It's best not to burn bridges. If they ask you to come back, take the high road and explain that you don't break commitments/contracts. If you haven't already, take your personal stuff home now.

Yeah, I guess the "it's the law" comment was sort of stupid. But it does tend to be the common practice.

Congratulations on completing the process so painlessly and without burning any bridges. And of course on the baby girl. Good luck with the move and in the new position. Let me know if the current company lets you hang around for two weeks. Just curious.

thanks all for the well wishes.

Meadbh, I told my supervisor that I wasn't interested in a counter offer and we had made our minds up. I think it's cleaner that way anyway...

Got a note from the manager this afternoon. While there was a little trying to shame me into staying because of all the time and money spent on training me, it was overall quite pleasant. the manager also echoed my supervisor's comments that I should "never hesitate to reconsider resignation or rejoining megacorp" (his emphasis). it's quite a shame that one has to quit to get the salary and career path (i don't want to be a manager, I just want to work overseas).

i highly doubt that i will get shown the door before Aug 3rd. There is a major shortage across the industry for what I do. but, I could be pleasantly surprised. I still have access to all the networks, files etc. Which is interesting, since I have access to just about every deepwater assets' files.

Working in a european environent I was never escorted out when I quit.
As for jobs like mine we have looong notice periods here I had to continue working for all the notice period, 2x for almost 6 months. Fortunately also all future employers are aware of this. I always made sure that I left on good, at least reasonable terms.

Better print all the notes with positive comments and store them at home.

WONDERFUL!! You handled that perfectly. :D

It's so nice to know that someone will help you out, should you decide you need this job again on down the road.

+1

Good luck for the future, keep us posted.

OK, thanks for the update... I know it is common practice but had never heard it was the law before.... just wanted to make sure that I was not missing something.

Job Boat is Rocking in the wrong way!

deleted - didn't mean to hijack the thread, creating another thread.

You mentioned that telecommuting gave you more time with family which evidently is important to you. Taking a position with significant travel is not consistent with that. On that basis alone the Specialist position would be preferable. It is my experience that working conditions are more important than pay unless you have a passion for management.

Were I you I would put them through the same grind as they are putting you: see if there is something better out there for you elsewhere. Don't be road kill because you stuck with their scheme. Again, those who jump ship first usually make it to shore.

Brat - Thanks for the feedback. I am not looking at this situation as glass half empty. I will seek opportunity internally and externally, and decide based on opportunity with respect to family and FI.

Situations such as you are experiencing force employees to look up from their desks. The only way your employer will achieve their payroll goals is to reduce headcount or compress pay. I suspect they will do both. Trust no one.

well, to close this up in case any is curious...

I've enjoyed traveling to and from my institution of labor by bicycle for a couple of years. a few days after i gave my notice of my resignation, a kind lady failed to see me on my bicycle and side swipped me. she was kind enough to at least stop and be accountable for her actions (which sadly, is about the best you can hope for these days). after being taken to the hospital, i was declared to be "ambulatory," to have no internal bleeding and just suffering bruised and broken ribs. although, i don't actually believe any of my ribs were broken. my supervisor believed the story, cast a little pity on me and it got me out of a couple days of "handover."

i enjoyed full and unsupervised access to all copy machines and network files to just about ever oil and gas asset my former employer owned. i had no real temptation to take any of the data nor did I. i thought there would have been some issues showing up at night with a dolly and moving boxes of my books out to a personal vehicle, but there wasn't. i guess security is pretty lax at the largest [-]oil[/-] energy company based in california ;)

DW and I also completed our "once in a lifetime" europe trip. DW continues to talk about going back. I also scratched an item off my bucket list while we were over there, and I completed the Paris-Brest-Paris ride in 87 hours and 43 minutes (linky in case you are curious).

DW and I also got our Houston home under contract in about 5 days, fetching a couple grand over asking price. We completed that sale while in Europe. We ended up buying a new home here in Salt Lake, which took WAY longer than expected. If any ever wants to use Provident as a lender, beware. We closed some 16 days after we were scheduled to. But, I have attached a picture from our yard as the sun sets over the great salt lake.

the new j*b is great!! the people are wonderful and it is fun. life has been a major improvement! we've even already completed our first weekend trip down to Moab. Can't be happier (even though the bene's suck at the new j*b). AND t-minus 9 weeks until new baby girl throws a ripple into our lives.

I would just tell the boss the news about your leaving. I would keep it short and you could follow up with an email. Give him/her time to think and they will probably call you back for a longer chat. You never know what other fish they might have to fry when you break the news.

There is no reason to say anything negative. You might need a recommendation from them sometime in the future.

Glad you posted, Rono. Best wishes on your new start, and with the baby.
