The Class of 2011

Me, too, please!

I am proud to count myself in the class of 2011.

Took the plunge 2 months ago, as my work was really stressing me out.

Now that the idea that I'm really retired is starting to sink in, I am formulating a routine that will help me to relax and enjoy the world passing before me.

LBYM has always been a fact of life for me and DW, so we expect that our quality of life will not be reduced very much by the lack of a paycheck. No expectation, ( or desire ) for any increased world travel or extravagant expenses.

Still, my calculations ( yes, I used FIRECALC ), indicate that I should be OK, barring any major health or financial crisis. I intend to take my SS benefits right around 63 or 64, and that together with our SWR, should just slightly exceed our budgeted expenses.

This is only my second post, so looking forward to being here on a much more frequent ( maybe even daily ) basis! :greetings10:

Welcome, Coolius (love the name)! If you would provide the date you retired this year and your age at retirement, one of us will be happy to add you to the list that appears in this thread. And congrats on your retirement!

Steelyman,

Retired on April 1, 2011. Everyone I talked to thought it was an April Fool's joke - then they saw that my grin was for real, and they knew......

I'm 60 at this time. Wow, it seemed like only a few years ago when I celebrated my "over the Hill at 40" birthday.......

Welcome to the new member of this orchestra: Coolius!

We are now officially in the class of 2011. Wife gave notice and likely 8/5-ish is her last day; mine will be around Labor Day...how appropriate, huh?

We're headed to Mexico and trying it out for a year or two after traveling a few parks (driving some junk to Dallas to park at daughter's house). We'll be hitting at least 4 (Mammoth Lakes / Yosemite, Yellowstone, Glacier & Mt Rushmore & maybe Blanchard Springs in AR).

Hope to keep up my posts while SOB...[/QUOTE

Yeah baby!

I thought the Soup Dragons were the originator of this song...I like their version just as much now.

Today was my last day too. This week has been very special thanks to the folks I leave behind at work, they were very kind.

Had a cake ceremony for everyone today with gag gifts, nice gifts and several cards with touching sentiments.

Had a very special dinner with all my Dept Mgrs last night and they gave me a gift after dinner (not unexpected), a top of the line iPad2 (completely unexpected). I was just blown away.

And tomorrow DW is taking me to nice steak dinner downtown Chicago (Wildfire).

Off to a very, very good start...:)

Home at last :) (an appropriate opportunity to use the name of a Steely Dan tune). Congratulations! And thank you for all your work in leading the class! Enjoy the steak, and that wish comes from about two hours south.

Congratulations, Midpack!! . Happy to see that they gave you the final dinner.

When I retired, my boss was out of town, so I merely went to HR for the final exit interview, cleaned out the final stuff off my desk, and walked by myself to the parking lot.

Two weeks later, he had a lunch and invited the whole Sales department ( 8 people ) to come, they gave me a nice card, but no gift ( cheapskates! )

Steelyman, sorry about the mixup!! BUt consider it as congratulations in advance, until you step over the line in August!

Congrats to you, Midpack. Sounds like a good way to go out. And an iPad is a wonderful gift.

I just got home from my last day. I'm so tired of cleaning out files and drawers and bookshelves and two computers. There was a lot of running around to do, turning in keys, getting clearances, etc. which kept me busy and non-emotional. I've just been focused on getting through the lists. I kind of lost it at the end, but that's okay. A colleague who is battling cancer came in to see me, and the emotional stuff hit then.

My unwanted party wasn't too bad. So many people are on vacation this week that it was manageable in size and I was able to spend a few minutes with everyone there.

I'm now heading for dinner with DH and DD. Let the decompression begin!

Congrats to Midpack and NeverBored. We who are soon to follow are jealous but happy for those of you who precede us. I went out to a nice lunch with the boss and his manager who flew in from AZ since it was his 30 yr service celebration. She was very gracious to take us out and was genuinely happy for me as well. Word is starting to spread as more folks are learning the news. Next week I will spill the beans to more folks on the Program. I am sure it wll be very unexpected for most.

It is fun to answer those who ask "What will you do?" with a reply of "Whatever I want!" 4 weeks and counting. Tonight DW and I are enjoying a nice bottle of Santa Cruz Mountains syrah.

A Happy and safe 4th to all!:cool::duh::clap::clap::clap:

Thanks! Enjoy the last days; I had some unexpected conversations with people I didn't know well, and it was good.

My answer to "What will you do?" is "All the things I haven't had time to do for the last 35 years." That works. And we enjoyed a bottle of Koehler Pinot Noir last night!;)

Congratulations! I hope your retirement is as much fun as mine has been. :D:dance:
Me too. And thanks, your retirement has sounded like bliss though I never would have guessed it began in 2009. Tempus fugit...

It sure does. Retirement is still bliss for me, though. The past year and a half have been terrific. Just yesterday Frank and I were talking about how great it is to be retired and free to do as we please. :D

Congrats to you three on 6/30.

+1. Welcome to the other side Southern Geek!

Only 8 working days to go!!! The Cal state budget is now passed and it goes into effect. Last week was very depressing with 20 people laid off. I will be the last one to go--I have to do the paperwork. Could someone fix my age on the list? It is 61, not 51.
I will not miss the State bureaucracy, getting up at 5:00 am, and the boredom.

Congratulations to all of the recent retirees. Glad you could join us. I don't know if it is just my imagination but this Class of 2011 seems quite large and growing every day. Like a good bottle of wine......2011 will forever be looked at as a good year!
To me, it's the "freedom to do what you want" that has been the most satisfying thing to me. I never knew it could feel so good.
