Um, is there some obvious reason you could not become a poor performer or genuine slacker? Even I could manage that.

For some of us, professional pride gets in the way. There were times when I had no problems saying I couldn't take on any more work because I already had enough (which was true), but I would never consider doing a half-assed job on any of the work I actually did.

The biggest problem is that my coworkers and customers are also friends that I've worked with for decades. It would be tough to slack off on them. But I may just slow up a bit after the holidays.

I plan to retire at the end of March 2014 @ 60 but did not share my plans with my boss or anyone at work as I planned to give notice on January 1st. DW retired two years ago @58 and loves it. This week my boss informed me of discussions of a possible consolidation of our division with another under their management which if it happens it will result in both of our positions being eliminated. A final decision is planned for mid December and will require a transition period to the end of March. I was trying hard not to show my exuberance and jubilation since if it's a go I will retire on the same day I planned all along but with a full year's salary and health benefits. Sometimes it pays not to give too long of a notice.

Wow! And people say luck doesn't exist. That is an amazing coincidence if it happens.

2 of 3 kids will have graduated and we want to do a-lot of outdoor travel, like hiking the AT and National parks. Next year is the goal - but we shall see - work is not terrible and the extra $ never hurts.

We just want to do other things besides pound away on a keyboard all day in a cubical. Maybe lots of 4 day weekends will suffice. We shall see.

A few days ago, my boss approached me about my 4/1/2014 retirement date. He asked that I stay on at 2 days a week. I said no. He said - How about 1 day a week. I said no. I said - How about a monthly retainer and I don't do any work, just provide assistance through phone and email. He didn't answer. I have my replacement ready to go,(been training him for 1.5 years), but I don't think the boss is comfortable with the fact that my replacement doesn't have the client relationships that I have. And neither of them want me to tell my clients that I'm retiring. The boss hinted that they could stop paying my monthly stock buy back payments if I quit in April. The next few months will be interesting.

30 days from today, I'm going January 3rd too and had the same quandary as you for a hot minute. Jan 3 is the middle of the pay period, but payroll can just figure it out!
