The Class of 2014

Will Fire next month!

Been doing the one more year thing for too long. Submitted my retirement in Feb, last day is April 11!

Am 58, DW is 57 and she retired 18 months ago. Have a Navy pension and Tricare, which really helps.

Planning to sell my main residence and move into our weekend lakefront place, proceeds will allow us to pay off both mortgages!

2 married daughters and they each had their first baby this year - grandparenthood is great1

Congrats on the new grandkid! We currently have 2, and number 3 is due next week!

Congrats Marty!

Will be FIREing around the same time period.

Welcome to the Class of 2014.

Thanks, and mucho congratulations to you too! Can't say I'm not nervous, event though I'm not really sure why. It occurred to me yesterday that my taxable income will actually increase. I'm gonna have to figure out a whole new tax strategy. No more maxing out the pre-tax retirement account.

Congrats Tom, how is it going a month into it? Will be joining you in retirement next month!

Hi Dave, if you were addressing this to me, it is going great so far. We just returned yesterday from a "retirement vacation" in Key West. It was great.

I have a ways to go to get de-stressed from years of work, I still think about it and don't understand why. Here it is Sunday evening and I still have this antsy feeling...like I have to go to work tomorrow...so I have to remind myself Sunday evenings are the same as a Friday evening!

I have a good home improvement project I will be starting tomorrow, and hopefully, warmer weather will soon come to the midwest. I have a lot to keep me occupied once spring finally arrives.:D

I as well make the move shortly 10 days...left 4/4. As for me also, Can't say I'm not a little nervous also. I DW is going to continue to work awhile, enjoys her job.
4 grand kids in the area and much to do.

WOW I am # 100? Do I win a house or a car?? Thanks for the forum, very helpful. I have been watching from the side lines for couple yrs. Now I am in the movie.

Congrats! With 10 weeks into FIRE, we will draw our 1st check from our retirement fund on April 1st. I still find myself pinching my behind making sure this is not a dream! It is so awesome to get up, have coffee, read the papar, hopp on the eliptical machine for 30 minutes, then hit the day, no office politics or narcissistic boss breathing down my back anymore. I can dig this!

Leaving the class of 2014

After much assessment of my situation and discussions with DW and others, I have decided to go the OMY route and delay my retirement until 2015.

Every planner calculator/program I have used, along with my Meagcorp-funded financial adviser, gives us 100% odds of success for our target lifestyle if I retire this year, with a "surplus" beyond that giving us additional lifestyle flexibility. We are fortunate to have 3 legs (my pension, our savings/investments, and our future social security) to drawn on.

So... I could retire this June without issue. But I am going to delay it into 2015. I am going to use the 12-15 months to still save some, but spend more from my current income to take care of a few large ticket items (primarily college for our youngest child, replacing our cars, and some home improvements). I still enjoy most of my job activities, and the salary is still "ridiculous" for what feels like a hobby at times. My management is giving me maximum flexibility to choose what I work on and how I choose to achieve objectives. But the layoffs at Megacorp continue (30% of my organization just got the boot) so I am not taking this for granted.

So my target is now June 2015 - unless Megacorp makes the 2014 decision for me. :)

Best of luck for all you still in the class of 2014!

You can add me to the class of 2014. Today is my last day of work. I don't have a pension, and am 48 so don't have SS for a while, but we'll be starting DH's SS in 6 years, so that's not very long to wait (he's 64). The next few months will be spent on a total home remodel and the beginnings of the garden renovation. The home remodel should be finished this year. The garden...not until I'm too old to work it :D

My first post here, although I've been lurking for years, learning from the experience and the wisdom of the people on this wonderful forum. While I had planned on getting out at 55, I was fortunate enough to have an easy work life that made staying on an easy decision. So, I fell victim to the n+1 syndrome. But, I was so bored out of my wits last year that I told management I'm leaving in 2014.

And so....

I retired from Megacorp on March 31st, 2014. I'll have to survive on my savings, 401K, and SS - and my now un-bored wits, of course. :)

Time to go check out some countries before I settle down to navel gazing and other supposedly retiree activities...

Today was my last day. Lots of snacks and reminiscing. Went to a meeting for a new project, Really? Never did finish cleaning out my desk. Oh Well. On to the next adventure - retirement. Got lots of projects and hobbies ready to go.

I've already missed my original Feb 2014 target date. At the time I thought I would not go until Feb 2015 at the earliest. Now I'm beginning to wonder. Just recently the BS bucket is starting to fill ever so slowly. We'll see how the next few months go.

1 Jan 14 here, being retired is a great way to start the year.

Congrats!

I recall that your DW was still working. Any chance she will join you soon?

NW - yes DW is still working, and has said that she is retiring this year, but refuses to say when. If she doesn't retire soon, she's going to miss a couple of trips

Well, I'm done. Today was my last day at work. I'll miss the people, but I don't think I'll miss the job. ;)
