The Class of 2014

akck - you deserve an attaboy or attagirl for keeping this list up to date! 130 already with more than 5 months to go - we may get to 200.

I pulled the trigger yesterday! I can't believe that I am actually able to do this. Thanks all for the great advise over the years. Still shaking from excitement and nervousness.

For the next update... #44. was age 54 on RE day.

Oh yeah...#5...I am/was 56 when I retired. The key turned in the Golden Handcuffs I had on.

Just wanted to provide an update...Seems we are on a bit of a roller coaster (should we and when should we retire). I thought for sure my DH would be done by now. Not so. However, the good news, I believe DH has crossed over into the "yes, we can retire" camp. This is huge for him. We are now starting and ending each day by saying, "One day closer." Not quite a countdown but it feels good to be making progress. I think DH will have a {bad} day that will push him over the edge and he will give notice (2 weeks). I am patiently waiting for that to happen so I can give notice. My notice will be longer (~6 weeks) and might come in a flexible work schedule for a short time. What I know for sure is if DH does not give notice soon, I might just be having fun without him. I am not starting 2015 employed.

Something to share...I have experience an interesting phenomenon with DH. On various different occasions and situations, DH says he can't do something (we need done to prepare for retirement) or commit to something because he does not have the time. I think that is easy...give notice and let's get on with it.

I hope you will be hearing from me soon that the beginning of retirement is here.

Keep working on him. :bat: :flowers::smitten: Whatever works.

We'll cheer you on :clap::clap::clap:

Last Day :) Looking forward to ER. Have and will continue to enjoy all the post on this blog.

Wahoooo for you. That's great. I bet you feel like a door opened to a whole new world! This is my last Full Time week. Starting to easy out of work tomorrow with 4 day weekends and working from home on Fridays.

SO and I are still in shocked mode that we can do this.

Happy day!!!

After hanging around this website for over 7 years, I am finally retiring on September 1st. As you can see by my information, I have been an infrequent poster. On the other hand I have read other posts almost on a daily basis. I will be spending the next 3 weeks turning over my files and updating my replacement on my accounts. I will get on a plane one last time in another week and then my travel for business will be over.

Since I am 64, I can hardly call myself an early retiree. But since I am retiring on my own terms before full retirement age, that probably puts me in the minority. The exception are people on this site. I feel like I have been in the One More Year syndrome forever. To celebrate, I just purchased a new vehicle for the first time in 12 years. My wife and I will be able to enjoy Fall travel in the RV for the first time ever, since I am no longer committed to attend an October trade show.

After over 30 years of obsessive planning and saving, I know things will be fine but now I am just in a daze.

Milkman

Congratulations, Milkman! On your own terms is a good thing!

Feeling a bit giddy...both DH and I gave notice this morning. Both discussions went better than expected. DH will work through the end of September and I will work through early/mid October to wrap up one final project. What a wonderful feeling...second only to retiring, I suppose.

I try to be careful about posting to this thread, because it's not my club. I was Class of 2011.

But I want to comment that, as you round third and head to home plate, it seems odd thinking about not going to work. A year or two out, though, you'll have a new life and interests!

It's nice to read your posts.

Well 'that' was anti-climactic!

But I think I am done. I had set Sept 30th as my last day consulting and had given the firm I was working with like 6 months notice, and about 3 weeks ago they hired my replacement (a guy I recommended btw), and so we just had a big push to finish one phase which we finished on Monday, and essentially he has taken over my position for the next phase. No calls all week nor any emails. Fingers crossed.

Thus I am done! I might get an occasional call, etc. but for all intents and purposes methinks I am retired as of today. My app says I still have 17 work days but unless someone calls me or emails me--I am done.

Congratulations!!!

I'm hoping you don't have the same experience my husband did.... He retired in January. About 8 weeks ago he got a series of panicked messages... The architect that had replaced him had quit with no notice. The firm is based in another state - so they had no-one local for the California jobs. He agreed to help them out till they either found someone else or the projects wound down. (They're in construction management phase).

I told him he flunked retirement. I also told him (and had him tell his boss) that we need to manage his income to not affect his SS for this year or our ACA next year.

Not too worried, the guy who replaced me is an old friend (known him for 25 years) and he was nervous about leaving his last position. So based on that I have a good 5 years before he leaves this position! Plus it is a very good project with a very good client. IF I wasn't so bent on retiring I would have enjoyed the project. So I am pretty confidant he won't be leaving anytime soon.

Hope your husband doesn't have too much work ahead of him. Flunked retirement--heh, I had a laugh at that!

Wahoo, I'm Done!

As of today, I am officially retired!
(At age 55 for the list.)

Coworkers, past and present, had a nice gathering for me the evening before, and many good wishes. While performing various tasks during the last day, I kept thinking "this is the last time doing this". It was kind of an odd feeling packing up stuff in my cube and hauling it out.

Like some others have said here, it doesn't seem completely real yet, but I'm sure that will change in time. Next step in the plan is for DW to retire in about a year and a half.

Well, one more week to go... Friday of next week at 3pm, I am ER'ed at 42.

The temptation to scream in exultation after my shift is over will be there I'm sure.

It is likely that I will post something epic on this forum - 24 years of back breaking, ultra high stress ( but high paying ) work is soon to be over. The emotions will be bubbling over as I enter a new phase in my life. I am not exaggerating when I consider this to be a rebirth of sorts.

First thing on the schedule after ER - a visit with the family doctor for a complete physical... I want a complete "state of my health" so that I can move forward with my new life without lingering worries about this or that. My job for the past 24 years has involved working outside in sometimes blistering heat and sun - there are some dangerous looking moles that have developed in the past few years, and more worrisome is that malignant melanoma have run rampant in my family. My family history is generally chock full of healthy, long lived individuals, but melanoma is the one red flag.

Anyway, getting to next Friday is likely to seem like an eternity.

My retirement looms large but I too am flunking retirement.

My last day was supposed to be 9/15 but it has been moved up to 9/12 in officially because I'm desperately needed at our other hospital.

Fortunately it is 1/2 the work for more pay and two weeks off per month. I'll do it until the end of the year then I'm done. And I get away from the people that have been driving me nuts for years.

So one week from today I'm done with this work and before Christmas I'm done for good.
