What did you do today? - 2023/2024 version

Enjoying mid-morning snack of honeydew melon, berries, nuts and chocolate chips :).

Then getting ready to take our 2 13year old cats to the vet for a second opinion on teeth cleaning/extraction. Our forever vet has retired and sold her practice and I suspect money grab from the new owner.

One of the cats does have issues, has had 4-5 extraction surgeries over her 13 years and has only 5 chewing teeth left. However, the previous vet never suggested 'cleaning' just when it was clear and she saw that teeth needed to be extracted. This is not the case now, just inflamation. No clear indication that any teeth need to go. The other cat has 'normal' teeth with some tartar as expected. This new vet does pro bono work for a local cat rescue org and is recommended by them. No one is going to be a happy camper today :(.

Spending time thinking about going to my bone doc and having my right knee looked at (again). I think I know what he is going to say, though. :(

My usual Friday:

I woke up early and spent some time catching up with family and friends by phone/text/email.

Served meals at our local senior center this morning and hung around with the other volunteers and staff for a bit afterwards.

Normally I head to meetings with the executive team of the local non-profit I support, but we had no meetings scheduled today, so I spent the time talking with clients and staff instead.

We have a NEW forever vet . She also scraped off the tartar on the 'normal' toothed cat like the previous forever vet did and stated that she had excellent teeth and would definitely NOT recommend cleaning. No signs of inflammation, gingivitis, or any type of dental issues.

As to the other cat, there are no clear indications she needs extractions...would need anesthesia and exploring to find out. Her remaining teeth appear to be rock solid, but she does have bad gingivitis (which I knew). We talked quite a bit about teeth in cats and her opinion is that to clean or not is up to us. The kitty would not be better off with cleaning/extraction vs. not. More of a comfort thing. Surprising to us, she stated anesthesia in older cats/dogs is not a danger thing. Older pets take longer to get over the effects of the anesthesia, up to a couple of days, vs. young cats who can shake it off much more quickly. Good to know. DH and I need to discuss; I'm leaning towards cleaning (last one in her lifetime unless there are clear indications for the need of extractions) while DH is leaning the other way.

Typical day on our short 6 week stay in Mexico...had breakfast, worked out, went for an hour walk on the beach, had lunch, then friends across the street popped over for a visit.

Then my wife found a rental for next year (she's been looking for a couple weeks) right across the street. A slightly nicer place for a little less than we're paying for this year. After a few texts with the rep we agreed on dates and price and are now booked for 8 weeks next year.

I cut some 11 Ga steel and patched a couple of knack boxes that had been hacked into on jobsites. I scabbed them on with the wirefeed welder.

Softball game here! We played great and won and enjoyed some beers and comradery post victory. Yea for retirement!

Rainy day here, heading over to pick up DGS (4) later in the afternoon so Mom and Dad can have Date Night dinner out. Little Guy is a hoot to be with!

Bicycle race this weekend. As usual, takes a 1/2 mile off the start to ramp up my heart rate and accelerate to race speed. But then it’s game on! Felt good and can’t wait until next time.

rinsed and sorted the hundred or so clams I raked yesterday, delivered 3 dozen to a friend, and started prepping stuff for sushi tonight. I also wrangled a stray dog that found its way into our back yard. turns out the dog was chipped with an airtag and its owners were already on the way when my wife called. not fun chasing a dog who thinks its play time while outside in the wind driven freezing cold rain.

Talked to a contractor about getting a stump ground down. He offered to do it, but was clear that he didn't own a grinder and had to rent. His price didn't seem like it would be competitive.
A stump grinding specialist bid less than half as much, and will be coming next week.

Went to ranch early morning and stayed till about lunch time. I walked in 3/4 of the way was melting and water running all over and didn't want to rut up the road. As I was walking in, I found a set of horns it is that time of the year once again. What a beautiful winter day of 55 degrees, full sun and not a whisper of wind.

Today is my granddaughters first Birthday. Got a beautiful picture of her early this morning. The year went by fast and last year on this day we were there when she was born. What a blessing she has been for us.

Nice shot Street! Sounds like a good day.

I took DWs 98 Corolla for a smog check. The tech said it was perfect. Yay.

Next up fluid changes. Also moved more of my salvage pile of materials to behind the garage, out of the way and mostly out of sight.

Nice find street! I had 3 bucks and a doe in my backyard yesterday. One of the bucks was missing an antler. So who knows - maybe the antler less deer was a buck that already shed. I need to go out looking for sheds.

Yep, he lost it somewhere Ron. I just enjoy hiking all spring looking for them. Just being outdoors and taking a lunch and gone for the day. I have found that most people will let you hike and look for sheds.

Good luck it is there somewhere. I never find them in tree areas but just in the open area seem to be where they like to shed at.

Something I never want to do again. 112 knobs & pulls installed @5 min ea average. Made it a long day.

1st of the month, so bill paying day today, also have a Drs appt for yearly derm/skin check, and the afternoon with DGS, age 4.

Found a shop to service the Gallet Flight Officer chronograph I found in my mom's things after she passed, and am heading out to ship it to them. The service costs way more than I'd ever spend on a new watch—not that I wear one anyway—but I'd like to get the handsome old timepiece going. I'll probably keep it for awhile before selling it. Unless DH decides he'd like it.

52° so I did some yard work. Township snow plow went overboard during the last snow and plowed part of the parkway making a bunch of dirt mounds that I needed to remove.

Birds are chirping. Spring has sprung. At least it feels like it after days below 0.

I puttered around with the dogs this morning, then I went in to change a battery in a pickup at work, and start cleaning up and investigating the oil leaks on the dump truck.
My truck shop had said it was at least a 40 hour job @150 an hour, plus parts.
What they were doing is letting perfect be the enemy of good. It has some minor leaks I can diaper, and one recent big leak. I think I have it cornered now and it is an easy fix.

Just survived hernia surgery. Had to be there at 0 dark 30 in the rain. DW was driving and was very nervous, but came through like a trooper:bow:
Minimal pain and discomfort.

What a beautiful winter so I'm taking advantage of the nice days also. Spend all afternoon in deadfall and rough river bottom land looking for moose horns. Found nothing again but was a great day to be outdoors. Moose all over and winter in there but never have any luck but that is okay.

That is a very attractive watch.

A few days ago the 12v battery on my 2021 Toyota Highlander hybrid suddenly died while parked in our garage. I'm not comfortable with jump starting the hybrid system (no reason to take a chance with frying some computer component), I decided to replace the battery myself.

The owner's manual provides a list of items that need to be re-initiated after battery replacement and it took only a few minutes to accomplish - except for the "infotainment" system which had a major issue. The screen cycled every 10 seconds or so between the maintenance minder screen, the navigation screen, and then blank, constantly repeating. It would not respond to any touch screen commands or any manual buttons, other than on/off

I found limited info on the web about how to restart the system (push and hold the off button for more than 5 seconds) and tried that a couple of times. The cycling between screens continued so I gave up and made an appointment with a Toyota dealer. My warranty has expired so I knew I'd have to pay for the repair. I took it in yesterday and got it back today, infotainment system back working as designed. The paperwork said "Inspected radio and media system. No faults or codes. System has latest software version. Performed basis reset and tested operation. System working as designed throughout the day." I was surprised that the "basis reset" did not wipe out any of my presets or contacts, and my cell phone is still paired to the car.

When I dropped it off yesterday and explained the problem to the service writer, he explained I should expect a charge of $185 for diagnostics and rebooting the system, more of course if something needed replacing. So when I picked it up today I was more than a little surprised when I was presented a bill for $0.00. Yep, nada.

I think I'm still in shock.
