yep, rice lake is near ladysmith and along 53

I just got back from Hayward and I used to live on the Wisc/UP border
in my former life. Great country if you can handle the winters and the bugs.
I know I would enjoy making that area our warm weather abode but DW
likes it here, so....................

Rice Lake, Wisconsin is a great place for LBYMs. If you don't buy a lake home, real estate is pretty inexpensive. Great area for outdoor sports.

John, did you haul the new boat up to Hayward for fishing?

Yes, housing is reasonable. I wouldnt touch a lake property with the prices and the taxes. I have a hobby farm and the taxes arent too bad. The Twin Cities folks are driving up prices though, but it has been moderate growth compared to some of these other crazy places.

Hello.
I am currently working in iraq as a security contractor. I am 26 years old and able to save 8,000 a month. The only expense i have is a piece of property in new hampshire. I would be able to live off from anywhere to 800-1000 a month. What kind of investments should i start off with?

Vanguard Tax managed balanced index , or any of their other diversified, low expense funds - Target Retirement Series, Lifestrategy, etc.

Or - if you plan on a career or something silly like that - do what I brow beat my oldest nephew(military pilot) into - a 'total' stock market index fund (1994).

Alas - he has gone over to the dark side - Read Four Pillars - and wants to screw around with his hands on the throttle - so to speak - it's a hormone thing.

At least - last we talked he plans to let Vanguard ride - actually it's the closest TSP version - :confused:probably closer to index 500.

P.S. - ever heard of White River Junction - he graduated from high school somewhere near there - ??Vermont or New Hampshire??

Hey guys and gals, Andre here. I just stumbled across this site the other day, and thought it would be a cool place to hand out and learn a thing or two! I'm 35, divorced, no kids, and basically just trying to balance saving as much as possible for early retirement, while still trying to enjoy the present.

Look forward to chatting with you all in the other forums and swapping stories and experiences!

Hi Maddy,

I live in the Maryland suburbs, about 10 miles east of Washington DC. As for goals, basically just trying to retire as young as possible! Right now I'm maxing out my 401k, putting in the max allowable for my Roth every year, and putting around $1300 per month into some mutual funds, so hopefully I'm on the right track.

Plus, the car's paid for, I pay the credit cards in full every month, and the only outstanding debt I have is a $100K HELOC.

Wow, good savings rate, and a lot of equity for a house in that area. Sounds like you are well on your way ;)

Hi, I`m Dancer373 and my sister, KB, introduced me to this site. I`m learning quite a bit here and am enjoying all the posts :)

Hi

I've been lurking this site for a few years now...
Lots of good information!
My Favorite poster has to be John Galt!

I'm 37 and my fiance is 35 and we're both trying to be FIRE by 50-55.

a few details about us....
We both work for a major University in the South.
We both lean Republican/Libertarian (pretty rare in academia).
Sticking around for our Ph.D.s really delayed our FIRE plans....

scrood
environmental engineer
born and raised in Central IL

scrood's fiance (soon to be ms. scrood)
microbiologist
GRITS (Girl Raised In The South)

Our financial situation:
Our combined salaries are about $130k
I'm paying off my school loans ($18k to go) and car ($17k to go);
We just bought a house ($240k to go);
We have a combined Retirement Nest Egg: $100k (mainly Index Funds).

Our plan is to:
(1) pay down our HELOC ($43k at 7.6%) and then the other loans,
(2) contribute the maximum to our retirement funds,
(3) live modestly,
(4) have some kids,
(5) sell the home and downsize to SW Colorado (or something similar).

that's about it...

Maybe he means that it is amazing that there could be someone other than John Galt whose favorite poster could be John Galt?

It is sure amazing to me. :)

Ha

hey scrood and angst.

Scrood, I am also an environmental engineer (been in mainly air pollution control) since 1995.

Guilty as charged. Love my own stuff.

JG: "Guilty as charged. Love my own stuff."

There's that honesty, that I've grown to love!

I may not agree with JG's alternative path to ER, but it is nice to see an occasional message that opposes the high-volume, liberal/baby-boomers that spout the old Democrat talking points...

I don't trust ANY baby-boomer, especially a liberal-Democrat, with my well-being or future.
I've experienced too many examples of B4 (Baby-Boomers Behaving Badly).

to maddythebeagle:
I specialize in biological waste/wastewater treatment.
I consider myself: (1st) an enginer; (2nd) a microbiologist and; (distant 3rd) a molecular biologist!

Ah yes - the life cycle of the human turd - one of my minor interests in ER.

What is the case for chlorine first, then areobic - before the lagoon:confused:

My swamp cane and cattails are double the height of the - other guys.

unclemick: Sounds like you've found a winner on your eHarmony.com application. ;)

i'm an anaerobic guy....but chlorine always comes after the aerobic treatment and clarification (solids settling).
too much solids will lead to high chlorine usage (microbes have a chlorine demand)

no consulting fee, this time.
