Yes, housing is reasonable. I wouldnt touch a lake property with the prices and the taxes. I have a hobby farm and the taxes arent too bad. The Twin Cities folks are driving up prices though, but it has been moderate growth compared to some of these other crazy places.

I am currently working in iraq as a security contractor. I am 26 years old and able to save 8,000 a month. The only expense i have is a piece of property in new hampshire. I would be able to live off from anywhere to 800-1000 a month. What kind of investments should i start off with?

Vanguard Tax managed balanced index , or any of their other diversified, low expense funds - Target Retirement Series, Lifestrategy, etc.
Or - if you plan on a career or something silly like that - do what I brow beat my oldest nephew(military pilot) into - a 'total' stock market index fund (1994).
Alas - he has gone over to the dark side - Read Four Pillars - and wants to screw around with his hands on the throttle - so to speak - it's a hormone thing.
At least - last we talked he plans to let Vanguard ride - actually it's the closest TSP version -
probably closer to index 500.
P.S. - ever heard of White River Junction - he graduated from high school somewhere near there - ??Vermont or New Hampshire??

hi matt and marilyn here in new york......im 53 and marilyn is 55...we hope to pull the plug in 2 years or so and retire..not sure quite where yet,open to anything but hate leaving the kids.......
we have quite a diversified mix of mutual fund holdings and at this point except for 4-investment apartments in new york city which over look central park which we are a partner in we dont own a home at this point...sold it and are renting for now until we decide where we want to retire to. we are fortunate enough to have a portfolio in the 7 figures....found this board by accident and really enjoy the postings....see ya'all down stairs

I'm 35, divorced, no kids, and basically just trying to balance saving as much as possible for early retirement, while still trying to enjoy the present.

Hi Maddy,
I live in the Maryland suburbs, about 10 miles east of Washington DC. As for goals, basically just trying to retire as young as possible! Right now I'm maxing out my 401k, putting in the max allowable for my Roth every year, and putting around $1300 per month into some mutual funds, so hopefully I'm on the right track.
Plus, the car's paid for, I pay the credit cards in full every month, and the only outstanding debt I have is a $100K HELOC.

I'm 37 and my fiance is 35 and we're both trying to be FIRE by 50-55.
a few details about us....
We both work for a major University in the South.
We both lean Republican/Libertarian (pretty rare in academia).
Sticking around for our Ph.D.s really delayed our FIRE plans....

Our financial situation:
Our combined salaries are about $130k
I'm paying off my school loans ($18k to go) and car ($17k to go);
We just bought a house ($240k to go);
We have a combined Retirement Nest Egg: $100k (mainly Index Funds).
Our plan is to:
(1) pay down our HELOC ($43k at 7.6%) and then the other loans,
(2) contribute the maximum to our retirement funds,
(3) live modestly,
(4) have some kids,
(5) sell the home and downsize to SW Colorado (or something similar).

I may not agree with JG's alternative path to ER, but it is nice to see an occasional message that opposes the high-volume, liberal/baby-boomers that spout the old Democrat talking points...
I don't trust ANY baby-boomer, especially a liberal-Democrat, with my well-being or future.
I've experienced too many examples of B4 (Baby-Boomers Behaving Badly).
