At one of my old jobs we had HOBOs and BUMs: Head of Business Operations and Business Unit Managers


You can occasionally see a person riding the rails today, not in a boxcar, but more likely on the end of a fluid or dry goods tank car. The angled ends leave a semi-protected spot where I have seen a modern day hobo riding.

We used to call HOBOs guys without work but looking. They would ask for work for food and possibly a little cash. They rode the trains in hopes of finding jobs and followed work rumors.

The BUMs would not work and had a self interest in decisions regarding what was personal property of others vs community property. However larceny was usually mild and might amount to taking some apples or produce as opposed to taking it all.
