Your all time favorites from any era:

All time favorites? That’s tough. How about

Favorite group - Mahna Mahna and the Snowths

Individual performance - Napoleon XIV “They’re Coming to Take Me Away”

Best song in history - Alfred E Neiman “Its a Gas”.

I couldn't possibly choose one, my tastes and preferences change over time anyway - though I am still convinced The Beatles are easily the greatest musical phenomena in my lifetime. Probably doesn't add to the thread but FWIW:

We (mostly me but some DW) have 2679 songs in iTunes, 443 different artists, I'd say my current favorites include The Beatles, Billy Joel, Sting, Radiohead, James Taylor, The Who, Jimmy Buffett, Nirvana and Led Zeppelin.

Of that it's Rock/Pop/Alternative 81%, Soundtracks (DW) 7%, Classical 3%, Holiday (DW) 3%, Jazz 2%, Other 5%. Lately I've been listening to classical mostly, ebbs and flows.

They're Coming to Take Me Away was the first 45 I ever bought!

The B side is the song backwards-guess he couldn't come up with another song.

Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, The Beatles, Elvis, Elton John.
But I don't pay attention to the artist all the time. Frequently a song comes on that I like and say thats so and so, DH corrects me and says no! that's XYZ!
So the above list may not be accurate:LOL:

Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced?
Beatles - White Album (actually, every album from Rubber Soul onward...)
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers
CSNY - 4-Way Street
Steely Dan - Aja
Miles Davis - Bitches Brew
Mahavishnu Orchestra - Birds of Fire
Frank Zappa - Overnite Sensation
John Hartford - Aereoplain

And many more...

“All time favorite music” is far too large a pool from which to choose. I’m sure this thread will end up including all the most appropriate selections by its end (in fact it already does).

I just wanted to make sure The Replacements got the mention they deserve.

Just a few that occur to me:

"Nessun dorma" from Puccini's "Turandot"
"Un bel di vedremo" from Puccini's "Madama Butterfly"
The Habanera from Bizet's "Carmen"

The next four to be played as loud as the stereo can play -

"O Fortuna" from Orff's "Carmina Burana"
The "Ode to Joy" in the 4th movement of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony
The "1812 Overture" by Tchaikovsky (with cannons)
The overture from Rossini's "William Tell"

Concerto for Two Violins in D minor, BWV 1043 by J.S. Bach
Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, BMV Cantata 147 by J.S. Bach
Adagio for Strings in B minor, op. 11 by Barber (especially the performance by Leonard Slatkin and the BBC orchestra on September 15, 2001)

Finlandia by Sibelius
Thaxted from The Planets:Jupiter by Holst
The Navy Hymn (Melita)

Jerusalem Hymn
Scotland the Brave
Men of Harlech

Ashokan Farewell by Jay Ungar & Molly Mason
Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen, as sung by KD Lang
Angel from Montgomery by John Prine, as sung by Susan Tedeschi
Calling You by Bob Telson, as sung by Jevetta Steele

My all-time favorite LP is Steely Dan's Aja. Best concert I ever saw was ZZ Top at the Cotton Bowl in 1981.

The original post asked for 1 each of the following categories. And I listed these Favorites, and was asking for your single top choice. Just one in each category.

Favorite:

1. Female Artist -Sarah Brightman
2. Male artist- Mel Torme
3. Group- The Carpenters
4. Orchestra- Jackie Gleason
5. Top Classical music composer - Bach

I guess it got sidetracked.

Your original, original post did have categories (but no examples). However, at 8:54am this morning, you revised your post to just ask "Your all time favorites from any era" (which is how it still reads now). Of all the responses, only MichaelB's occurred prior to your edit. Given the edit, it should come as no surprise that everyone thereafter responded as they did.

I grew up in Music City, USA. My family was around all the great country stars of the 1960's, including Patsy Cline.
Brenda Lee was always one of my favorites, as she lived in our community. Sat next to her in church one Easter.
But growing up as a young jazz musician, I tend to go more toward middle of the road jazz. I absolutely love Al Jarreau, Manhattan Transfer, Candy Dulfer, George Albright, Chris Botti, Lola Astanova and Caroline Campbell. I also listen to George Duke, David Sanborn and too many to list.

No all time favorites but a recommendation to keep up. I listen to Radio Paradise, an Internet radio station that plays an eclectic list from the 50/60s through current day,
vetted by listeners. I like it because I catch lots of my old favorites but also new music I would never encounter on my own.

No favorites. Especially with streaming music and the logic that feeds you music on Pandora, I listen to a lot of different artists, many I don’t even know. I’d say broadly I listen to a rock/pop mix leaning to the easier listening side. Artists like Jack Johnson, David Gray, Sarah McLachlan and Adele come up frequently. Much different from my younger years which included, Ted Nugent, Rush, Led Zeppelin.

Couple of my favorite concerts were David Byrne and when Sting and Paul Simon toured together.

One band that many seemed to like that I could never stand is/was the Doors. Just never got it.

This morning currently listening to a Steve Winwood album - Greatest Hits Live. Nice 👍 on Amazon Music.

Classic rock is what I mostly listen to. 60's to 80's mostly. Like some of the newer rock, but absolutely can't stand rap or new top 40 type music. Sometimes listen to old country, prefer that over new country when I am in that mood.

All time favorites are Bob Seger, Eagles, Stones, Beatles. Then I go through spurts where I alternate in some Pink Floyd, ZZtop, Elton John, Mark Knopfler, Styx, Cat Stevens.

I listen to a lot of stuff from classic rock to country but my favorite artist of all time will always be a childhood favorite, Elvis Presley

We're big, online & local radio, fans of The Acoustic Storm - sadly host Jeff Parets recently died of cancer age 67: https://radiofacts.com/radio-veteran-host-of-the-acoustic-storm-jeff-parets-dies-at-67/

The show will apparently continue, whether with re-broadcasts, a new host, or a combo of both we personally don't know at this point..

Acoustic Storm :: The Best Variety of Acoustic-Rock

Jeff's widow Audrey is continuing the program along the same lines...great.

If I had to pick one for my desert island disc it would have to be the big 'O', Roy Orbison.

Had to think hard about this...

Favorite:

1. Female Artist - Ella Fitzgerald
2. Male artist- Van Morisson
3. Group- The Pogues
4. Orchestra- O.M.D.
5. Top Classical music composer - Mick Jagger....:D

There was a juke box at a place were I spent quite a few summers. The owners of the place weren't real active at changing out records, and it was either the jukebox or the half-dozen 8 track tapes, so we heard a lot out of the jukebox. I put together a group to poll to see if we could remember as many songs on the jukebox as possible and we came up with a list. I pulled together a zip of the mp3s. Not my favorite songs ever, but they have a corner of my brain.
