Class of 2020

Congratulations to all in class of 2020.

I'm finishing my part time work on May 12 th. So glad to be retiring but it feels odd now with stay at home orders in my state. We had plans to be camp by mid May but that may not happen. Feeling a bit bored without the plans. Anyone else making new plans ?

Last day is May 22....cant get here fast enough lol. Been working from home since mid-March- a nice transition into retirement.

Add me in July 1

Here is a link explaining what got me out. The first group retired yesterday and it now seems more real. Still have 8 weeks to go but the last 7 have been at home and that has been better. Not sure when or even if we will be back before then. Still a bit too far to imagine but I am starting to see nirvana approaching:dance:

The world keeps changing around this pandemic. We're learning more and more every day and still don't seem to be a whole lot closer to knowing how this all ends. But, I'm hopeful our brilliant scientists will figure this out and the world will find some level of normalcy.

On a brighter note, Your LIST update is here! We have lots of updates and several additions to the 2020 Class, so please welcome them aboard the train!

Congratulations to everyone that's "Made It" so far! Livin' the dream (although likely in isolation)!

Thanks Draggon for the consistent updates. We’re all in this together.:clap:

Thank you.

Feels awesome to be free. Shut down at 5 after my last web teleconference, headed out the back gate, and currently hiking on my favorite gravel road down to a serene and isolated stretch of river.

It’s a slow walk as I thank the good lord for the blessings of a loving wife (married 33 years), a career that spanned 3 decades, and 3 kids who are young professionals pursuing their dream careers (engineer, nurse and physicist).

Cheers to all my class of 2020 brothers and sisters!

Congrats 1242. Looking forward to shutting down my PC after that final web conference in 142 more days...

Late notice to the 2020 club.

Retired April 16th and loving life!!!

Moved near the coast last July.

Days are filled with whatever comes up.

The best thing for me is that time is largely irrelevant now. Stay in the moment and soak up life.

COVID 19 has changed some things for us so, looking at 12/31. Still 2020 but a few months later. (watching and waiting).

Congrats to all of you who have already pulled the plug. My online teaching gig will still run out, but the University has delayed grade posting until May 19th, so I'm "working" 4 extra days as a result (I finished grading except for a few late assignment submissions).

I wish you all luck. Went on a 12 mile/2600 ft hike up Mt. Scott Thursday and plan on hiking/fishing most days beginning next week. Given the uncertainty of the pandemic, I'm glad I opted for online/half time option for 5 years to ease into the full retirement water, but I feel ready to take the plunge now. Only 4 years until full SS, but I've got 5 years worth of cash for withdrawals, so I think we're ready.

My Husband retired Saturday:) Unfortunately, due to COVID, graduation ceremonies for the University were cancelled. He was looking forward to marching for the final time. Since he was teaching on-line, there was no real closure or saying goodbye to colleagues. Very anticlimactic, but happy nonetheless!

I did a five week furlough recently because of the pandemic. I am back at work now for the next eight weeks, then out for good.

I was a little depressed at the beginning of the furlough for the same reasons as your husband. I thought all these years of work and it could end in an anticlimactic way.

Then I had an epiphany. I realized that the future held far more attraction than the past. Sure there was a touch of sadness in leaving a career, business I founded and some work friends behind, but after having a taste of retirement for just a few weeks, the joy, freedom and intoxicating feel of having the rest of my life ahead of me had far greater attraction.

I can move on now without regret, sadness or fear. The future is so freaking bright!

Due to sudden vacancies and changes in management i was talked into extending my retirement date to 31July2020 . My mind was already out the door :greetings10: and i figured it was way too late for anyone to suddenly start worrying about a lack of decisions about transitioning my responsibilities:whistle:. But a sudden moment of weakness resulted in the little angel  on my right shoulder winning the argument to do the right thing :banghead:. So my count down clock has moved from 14 back to 58 more days. Hopefully this is just deja vu and not the movie groundhogs day . I try to think of this as doing something good for society (paying extra taxes, helping out a struggling organization, being a productive member of society). However my retired wife called me a sap . Hopefully the rest of you keep the faith and don't delay retirement so i can continue to live vicariously though you .

OTD, that was hilarious! I mean, yeah, sorry about the delayed retirement, but your post made me laugh. Excellent use of emoticons throughout... :D

Unfortunately, I'm fearing a very similar scenario for myself a bit later this year. All efforts to replace me were put on hold in early March...

Congrats on the husband's retirement!

I just had a similar conversation with my niece who graduated from college this spring. She used the very same word - anticlimatic.

Is your hubby a forum member? If not, I'll add him to our list as "Lucie's Hubby"... :)

You can add me to the class of 2020 please. Target is December 2020. Some possibility I might get booted earlier, or go voluntarily, due to employer chaos at the moment. Would rather keep to my plan, but we shall see.

I am ready financially to retired in 2020. But I am not sure that i will have the courage to do it. Maybe in several month after the "second wave" outcome.
The book How Much Can I Spend in Retirement by Wade Pfau was very helpful
to pull it all together.

These 2 concepts has help me understand what asset allocations adjustment was needed to have confident in funding for retirement.
The funded ratio concept( your assets divided by your liabilities – can help guide you toward the retirement you want)
Reducing Volatility when it matters most (near retirement)

Other data were helpful.
example: for 35 years retirement w/ 10% failure optimal asset allocation: 56% stock/44% bond. These allocations should be in conjunction w/ one's funded ratio.
Thanks.

These are interesting concepts. If you have access to Fidelity's retirement planner they calculate a ratio similar to your funded ratio concept. They calculate what percentage you have above or below hitting 100% of your target funding. They call it RPM, retirement preparedness measure.

The second concept of reducing volatility can also be called sequence of returns risk.

Class of 2020 addition

You can add me to the 2020 class! I should be retiring at age of 55.5 at the end of this year. I may be retiring from my home den rather than the office cubicle, but that still works for me!

It's getting real now!
Three days off, four days on, four days off then three days on. My last working day is May 29th. Vacation (or more likely quarantine) the month of June and the first week of July. I check in with HR July 6th to drop of my badge and sign some papers. Sadly I will not get to do a traditional farewell tour due to the new pandemic restrictions. Maybe a Zoom party!

I got a taste of the next adventure. I was furloughed for 7 weeks and just returned to work. During my time off I worked a part time (unpaid) position of hired hand here at the NeverDone Ranch. I believe I impressed the supervisor enough that she may let me stay on indefinitely!

When the future is way more exciting than the past, then you know you are making the right decision.
