Class of 2020

I just gave notice Friday, last day is March 13. My manager asked me to stay on until they get my backfill in, but I realized that would be bad for my mental health, so I need to say no.

I'm SO ready, but also a little freaked out. I started planning ER with my first "real job", and after 22 years of working the plan, it's time to take the leap.
 
Don’t risk your health. Neither you or your manager will even remember the scenario 3 years from now. Congrats!
 
I thought yesterday was my last day at work in my position, but thanks to the market correction, I'll be at work again today. Begin transition role Monday...

You can find so many examples of where, out of the sense of obligation and loyalty, many said yes, and regretted it. The urgency to replace you will immediately dissipate (your manager won't tell you, but if you say yes to 2 more months his plan it to add another 3 before that ends). The backfill will undoubtedly take longer than expected to fill and train. Months will go by, during which you'll be dead-man-walking.

I’m in this situation now and felt strong enough to ask for and get a retention bonus. I also asked for but didn’t get a title change due to the usual HR need to interfere with logic. What could you ask for? A work from home arrangement through the end, etc.?
 
Just curious, if anyone in the class of 2020 is having second thoughts/regrets for pulling the trigger this year.

All my planning has been with a correction in mind, but now that it is happening, it is making me a bit nervous. But, still planning to RE at the end of April.

NOPE. I have been planning for last week for the last few years. I can ride out a whole lot more turbulence than that. I have 10 years in short term, 12 years in mid term/income producing stuff and about 33% of the rest of my portfolio in long term. The LT was the only bucket to take a hit. My portfolio is back to where it was last November and I certainly didn’t feel poor than. I am moving some of the short term into bucket 2 and 3 as opportunities arise.
Dam the torpedos, full speed a head. I am not letting a Berning virus take away my retirement.
 
Add me to the list. Pulling the plug in mid-march.
The correction is something that I would not have wanted, as this is almost perfect SORR. But it has helped me pressure test the plan.
 
I wish the 2020 class many years of happy retirement!

I couldn't think of a better time to get out as the market is heading down. A great time to retire!

I retired when markets were shaky in 2016 people thought I was crazy. I took the lump and invested it all, while things were on sale and since that time the market rose to over 14000 points. If I would of stayed working that money in a pension plan would not have benefited me like it did once I had my hands on it.

I know there are people here that would disagree in my madness but it really doesn't matter.

Despite the incredible market over reaction and panic $ drop I am still retiring as planned in May. I am comfortable with my market allocation (approx 50/50). The market has no bearing on this decision. We set up a CD ladder for the next 5 years; also, cash $ set aside for potentially 18-35 years out depending upon expenses of course. Our stock allocations might never be touched by us and instead go to our children. Or we will use this $ for increased housing costs. Not sure.

The cash cushion allows me to sleep at night.

I learned many of these $ principles here. Thank you all for your wisdom- hopefully I learned well.
 
We oversaved for retirement. Even though we have an agressive AA, we shouldn't need to pull from the portfolio for several years. The market drop doesn't bother me at all. No second thoughts.
 
No second thought due to the market correction here either. I planned for a 25% dump in the markets during my first year of retirement in my model. I will be buying a little here and there if this continues downward this week. I believe this has been a huge overreaction.
 
Remember that sequence of returns thing we talked about? Well it might be here.
I prepared, I bet most of the class did as well.

Yeah, while I don't think my manager would drag her feet, I know there's a considerable risk that it could take them longer than anticipated to find someone, or the req could be frozen for business reasons. I've seen it happen many times during my career!

I was chatting with one of my coworkers yesterday, and she said that she's had a number of people ask her, "Is Maenad really retiring? She's gotta be just fibbing and refusing to tell us where she's going." I'm thinking of having my group tell people they think I'm actually going into the CIA.
 
The market dropped? Last "working" day is this Friday. My overpriced offer on a good house was accepted, so I am under contract for the 3rd time to get another house.
 
I've been calling clients for two days now. I have gotten a variety of reactions from anger to happy for me. I can't wait to be done with this- it's generally awful. I'm mentally drained when I leave the office. The good news is that I have been getting more calls in than I expected. Therefore, I'm taking Friday off.

Sounds like you've been blessed in many ways. Not a bad way to live! :)

As for the RSU's; I certainly understand waiting for the vesting in September, but thinking too much about what's "left on the table" is a fool's errand. It's all a trap, I tell ya!

I am definitely in the class of 2020, but the exact date is at the discretion of megacorp. They are holding a good severance package over my head and I have to behave until they release me. Initial estimates were June 1, which quickly slipped to July 1, and recently to October 1. I do have signed papers stating it will happen before year end. I am almost guessing it goes to the last day of the year. I can't afford to walk away from 18 months pay plus retiree medical, so I'm just trying to enjoy the ride:cool:.

I was outta there on 2/28/20. What a relief! I fulfilled my commitment to USG customer, and received thanks.

Each dept. involved in the separation had a different date. Not one responsible minicorp employee contacted me to confirm at the beginning. The actual date (2-28-20) went from my initial email into some robot system. I completed 3 or 4 tasks, and thought it was a slam dunk.

HR and IT had 2-14, so my access to everything was turned off on 2-15. That was a cluster to get turned back on. Later, my supervisor admitted he gave HR the wrong date.

Captain Kangaroo (Security) sent me wrong form 3x's. It contained another employees sensitive information. Sammy Davis Jr (Security) had a chuckle in elevator and asked me why I was still there, as HR thought I should be gone Jan. 31.

I no longer travel with that circus!

Retired 2.5 years ago and portfolio up less than 10%.
Many folks here can have potential SORR issues for the first 10-15 years of retirement depending.....
