I just came across this .pdf file which explains how Edward Jones advisors are compensated. It includes a 2% fee to buy or sell mutual funds and stocks, front and back end load funds, 12b-1 fees and a diversification travel awards program.
They talk a bit about rewarding their advisors success. I'm quite sure they don't measure success by how good the customer's returns are.
If I had to go with an AUM or commission based fees, I'd with out a doubt go the AUM route. The Edward Jones reward system does not have the best interest of the investors in mind.
