Easiest solicitation ever for us was when flight attendants on a flight back to the US asked for our foreign coins for http://www.unicefusa.org/campaigns/changeforgood/

Since we couldn't exchange coins (only paper bills) for US money anyway, it was pretty painless.

Unfortunately, Europe has taught me to ignore panhandling. It just makes you a target.
