Class of 2022

Congratulations!

I feel the same way as you. I'm holding off until January to let the cat out of the bag for my April departure. And looking forward to that sense of relief you feel.
Thanks - it's an amazing feeling you have to look forward to!

Do you guys tend to work your normal weekly hours right up until you retire ?

At my w*rk it depends. I am in HR and I have seen all of the data for my place. We have 13 different unions plus a large non-represented group and it varies. In some cases they are not permitted to take vacation (or PTO) to extend the last day of w*rk. Meaning they can't stop on the 5th and take vacation until the next month. Of those permitted to do it, about a third do. Generally it is just a matter of extending to the first or second w*rk day of the next month to get an extra month of health insurance. A lot of people just w*rk their normal schedule up to the last day with a normal day off here or there.

In my case, I plan on FIREing just after I turn 53. That is not "retirement" from a corporate perspective so I absolutely cannot do it. I will get paid out my unused vacation for 2022 and my bonus for 2021 but no other benefits that retirees get. But I will be free and that is priceless.

Unfortunately yes, there's too much work right now to cut back informally. We'll see if that remains the case later this year though.

Adding myself to the Class of 2022. Planning on April after I vest in some company stock options and max out my 401K contributions. Healthcare is still undecided but will figure it out!

Well, cr@p.

I'm on the list for April of 2022. That's when the last ISO vesting is done. However, I may need to go earlier than this due to health issues. I have been feeling run down most of the summer and have a dull ache in my upper right abdomen. Yesterday, I had an ultrasound and they found a 6cm lesion on my liver. Doc ordered a CT with contrast as next step. I'm pretty concerned as to what this is. Running thru all the scenarios that it could be and how to stay on payroll until april.

So, while we are doing the FIRE planning, make sure we live in the process. I'm afraid I have had my eyes on the prize and neglected some fun along the way.

Sorry to hear this, Sean. I do hope it turns out to be nothing too serious and you begin to feel better. It is great that you have the option to consider leaving earlier to focus on your health - many don't have that choice.

I am sorry to hear this too. Try not to focus on what it could be and just deal with what you do know. I speak from experience. I am sure you will have many opportunities for fun in the future but good point about neglecting fun along the way. The point of FIRE is to have fun sooner while you are still able not to delay all fun along the way.

I'm putting myself back in the class of 2021. Told my supervisor last week that I am retiring 12/31/2021!

Congrats kaudrey! I too told my supervisor 12/31 but also said I could stay until Jan if needed. So I'll stay in the class of 2022.

And Megacorp just announced we won't be returning to offices until Jan 2022! Woo hoo, no more commuting for me!

Thanks, friends. Got CT scan back today on the liver. Moderate to severe fatty liver disease. The 6.5CM lesion is a big fat hemangioma. Sigh of relief....lots of mindf**king the last week.

I guess I still have to work until april....

Better than the alternative. That is how they found my late DW's pancreatic cancer.

Leaving early January and then taking 10 weeks of vacation. I may elect to have it paid, but the vacation provides 401K matching. I am going to get Health Insurance from the company I am currently collecting a Pension from, it is more expensive, but rather not worry about Cobra during the year

I have already told them I am leaving. I am not retiring because the BS Bucket is full. I can afford to retire so don't see the point in waiting. I am just wanting to work a good transition as I want to ensure the project I am leading is set up to succeed after I am gone

Congrats to you Kaudrey! .. I'm still aiming for 2022 .. it's either August 2022 or December 2022 for me. Between now to my retirement, I'm hoping to raise another 300K.

Thank God it ain't that bad. I'm also fully vested by Jan. 2022 .. so I have to make it to Jan. 2022 to be fully vested.

@ seanpizzle - good news and I'm sure its a relief.

We had a staff meeting today and my boss announced my early retirement at the end of the year. She thanked me for all of my contributions to the team and the company, and re-iterated while she was happy for me personally that I would be sorely missed. I really appreciated that. Up until now (after telling her of course) I called of couple of other senior people on our team to let them know but now I guess I can distribute the news more broadly to my working teams as well.

She did ask me to help recruit/interview my replacement when they post the backfill position, which I'm happy to do.

Such a relief!

That has to be a huge relief to finally have it out. I keep dropping hints but I think they think I am kidding.
It totally is!

I was careful to not drop hints, but I also stink at keeping secrets. Once I green-lit my FIRE date around mid year I sat with it for a bit more but eventually I had to spill the beans. Though I have a good relationship with my boss and thankfully the being escorted out the door scenario didn't happen in my case.

Don't forget that there is a limit on HSA contributions based upon how long you are on a HDHP. https://www.irs.gov/publications/p969#en_US_2020_publink1000204046

So after you leave, you will need to be sure to get a health plan that qualifies for the HDHP rules for HSA.

I plan on going with a short term plan until the end of the year as by April I will have earned too much to bother with ACA (yes, I know they have raised the limits for 2022 on the ACA).

read the link, but can someone dumb it done for me.

currently spouse and I have HSA, individual contributions, plan is to contribute the max 3500 each this year, however we plan to switch insurance from employer HSA eligible plan to Tricare ,should be eligible to to that around November , but effects our contribution limits we can wait until January 2022.

just to keep in the theme of this thread, we are class of 2022 was planning on May but this is now delayed to November 2022 due to spouse mobilized for the military, the reason for switching to Tricare.

First off, good luck on the mobilization. My SIL just got back from Kuwait.

My understanding of the HSA is that you basically have to prorate the amount. If you have a HDHP for 6 months then you can only contribute half into the HSA. People get into trouble by front loading in the year but then not having the HDHP all year long.

Tricare is a great option and far better than ACA, Cobra, or really any other option generally available.

Yeah....and by boss begged me to stay longer, so now I'm back here...I told her I'd stay two more months, so end of February 2022.

Great news Kaudrey! The water's warm here in the Feb pool!

Actually, my date might slide to March depending how flexible my employer is with finishing out my career using my 2022 vacation and floating holidays. Ideally I want to make my termination date April 1st, but my last "work" day 2/23. This would get me past required dates for keeping last batch of RSUs and into an extra month's company benefits.
