The Class of 2014

It is DONE! Turning in keys today. Yippee! Moving today to NYC. Thanks to all for so much good advice!

You can add me, although I just joined a couple of days ago. I posted an Intro thread, but the political situation at my job went downhill really fast after they hired a toxic person and a week ago today I had a discussion with my boss and suggested that we determine the conditions of my departure. His face was flooded with relief. We came to a deal and my last day was May 9.

I'm 61, have been saving and investing all my life. I'd planned to work to 65 but after DH and I talked it over and I made the decision last weekend, the longer I thought about it, the more it made sense.

"Someday" is finally here and DH and I are alive to enjoy it!

Late to the thread here as is often the case. My last day was April 30 (at age 57). Many thanks to go around from a long-time member/lurker and occasional poster (e.g. thanks to members of this forum, bolgeheads, and the usual suspect authors - perhaps beginning with Bob Clyatt's "Work Less, Live More"). I can't really say which spark lead to the FIRE. There have been too many useful tips and inspirational stories here to call out individually, so thanks to all. It feels great at last to be re-creating on our own terms. I suspect I'll seek the group's collective wisdom a bit more now as we readjust and retool for the next phase. ;-)

52 days remaining. Of those, 12 are weekend days, 1 is a federal holiday, and at least 4 are sick leave days I need to burn up or else give them back to the employer. That leaves me with just 35 working days!

Hang on.....I just did a re-count, and there are actually 14 weekend days, instead of 12....woohoo! 33 work days to go...!!!

Marty...You are going to be surprised at how fast the time will go. Come on in...the water's fine! You worked and earned it!

Whoops, flight cancelled. Moving postponed until tomorrow am. Am rather ticked off. But better than a plane crash, to look on the bright side.

My former boss (10 years older than I and retired) and I went for breakfast yesterday. He wanted to know what my status was at work. I told him that I retired, but I still have a company phone so that they can contact me when they have questions. He then asked when I was going back to work. I said never. Then he asked the question that must have been asked to people on this board a million times - "What are you going to do all day?" Told him that I was busy with yard work, and millions of hobbies, going to do some traveling, etc. He said - "That won't last very long". I said "Yes it will - I'll make sure it does".

Several posters here have posted how great it is be retired and I never really understood just how right they were until I retired myself.

Congrats to all Class of 2014 members!

Down to 50 work days left. My preference is to go part time for a while after that, although it's not necessary financially, and I've been talking to management since February of this year. I'm getting some push back about me leaving now (it's complicated), and they're dragging their feet. So, it looks like I'm going to have to be more insistent. But, I want to do it in a professional way, it's a good company, and also not burn any part time work bridges. It's going to be an interesting summer.

Looks like things are falling into place. No more management push back, my replacement is here, the formal announcement is imminent, and I've arranged some part time work (way less than half time but enough to be interesting).

Looks like my official retirement date will remain 30 June 2014 but, I'll use vacation for the last few weeks of that. So, I have about 12 working days left. I have to admit that after 30+ yrs working and all this time planning, my feelings are mixed; anticipation, excitement, and a little anxiety. I'm sure that's not unusual, and I plan to just take it one day and one issue at a time....or, Fore! issues at a time. :D

I signed the final HR paper work this past week (submitted my letter of resignation 2 weeks ago). My July 2 retirement at end of day is now written in stone.

24 more days left for me excluding weekends and memorial day.

Congrats Huston! Don't ya just love it when a plan comes together?? Enjoy!

I'm still thrilled to be part of this group. Currently enjoying a margarita and Mexican lunch at 11:45 am on a breezy shaded patio at a Houston restaurant. Amazing how quickly I've found peace of mind in 3 short weeks.

Forgot that next Monday is a holiday, after today I only have 7 more office days left :)

It really is going by quickly now.

Aye, the final countdown seems fast in some ways; slow in others. Having HR schedule one's exit interview, and having a farewell party slotted on one's last afternoon, seems a bit surreal. "Is that really me they're talking about?"

Twelve calendar days, seven work days, to go...

.......................

Gave tentative notice as a matter of courtesy a few months back, and wondered how much of it would be squandered before my departure - somewhat of a niche skill set in a not so common field, so it can take time to seek out candidates. Luckily, my manager and I agreed on a potential in-house successor, who has been receptive to taking on my role. Getting him started soon would offer a great opportunity for me to do some mentoring on the multitude of regulatory, code compliance, and outside resource details before I'm gone.

But, the Megacorp bureaucracy has got a stranglehold on things, or so my manger seems to think (these days, I'm even more inclined to just buck the system and do what it takes to get the job done), as he says HR won't post my position and allow recruiting to begin until I give official written notice, which they told me "just stop back in about 2-3 weeks before you plan on retiring" when I gave them the same advance courtesy notice. So, just to play nice, I tried going through corporate HR instead of locally, and they said I'd have to wait until at least 60 calendar days before, which will be during the first week of June. And of course, I'm not really all that comfortable in doing so to begin with, for all the usual Megacorp trust issues.

For some reason, the bureaucratic quagmire just makes me chuckle these days. After August 1, it will all become a distant memory. 41 working days left!

Class of 2014 - Count Me In!!

I gave my notice today. Boss was out of town when he got the e-mail. We will be talking on Tuesday, so my last day may be then or first week of June.

At age 56 I've been working for this for years. Being of a financial mind it's always been more of a hobby for me to keep "running the numbers". My time will mostly be adding to the volunteer hours that I do at a local animal shelter. Have to say that cleaning the poop there sure beats shoveling it in the cube farm. May do a bit of travel and just enjoy the Rocky Mountain summer.

Thanks to everyone for the continued support and inspiration to get to this point.

Oops, forgot to check in. 5/1/14 was my first day to FULL retirement. I retired in 2007 but I've had a retirement job but this time its the real deal.

Gave tentative notice as a matter of courtesy a few months back....After August 1, it will all become a distant memory. 41 working days left!
Similar story and exact same date. I have found multiple ways to count down:
17 working days if I take the vacation time I have earned
65 days, 1 hour, 21 minutes and 22 seconds in real time
August 1st is my birthday to boot :)

Too cool! My birthday is July 18 - which I am taking off to celebrate DWs retirement on 6/26, "my day", and only 10 more w*rking days left after that for me.

I gave my notice on May 11th, my last day of work will be July 11th where I will be flying back to the US since I have been working abroad since 2008. Looking forward towards that moment.

FIRE in the Hole!

I just talked to my manager this morning to let him know of my intent to RE. He was quite surprised, but genuinely happy for me. He was also very appreciative that I gave him an extended notice, since there are special requirements for my position that will take additional time to qualify a replacement. My target date is the first week of September (which gives me the minor bonus of one more paid holiday and another month's share of vacation hours).

This afternoon I was in a meeting with my manager and several team leads, and the topic was just coincidentally about future staffing. I saw a couple of jaws drop when it came out that I was going to RE.

So, sign me up for the Class of 2014, and let the countdown begin!
