The Class of 2014

:tongue::tongue::tongue:

OK. But, we need a picture of you with your tongue out.:tongue::tongue:

Well, no tongue out picture, but inspired by a nudge from Nords via PM I have started a countdown (including a countdown widget on my phone) to the day I quit. I have chosen January 2, since I should be in the office that day, but will have to double check with DW. That puts me 132 days out. On the road the next couple of weeks for work, but since there is little actual work to be done my buddy and I will spend most of the time in the woods.

Congrats & well done!

I'm not too far behind you.:tongue::tongue::tongue:

T minus 52 weeks, as of today. It's a milestone of sorts; it feels good to reach that one-year-to-go mark.

Btw, akck, you can put me down for 9/1/14.

At first I thought I shouldn't be on the list, because I plan to go part-time, and that isn't really being retired. However, I've noticed that "retirement" comes in all shapes and sizes, and we have plenty of people here who continue to work part-time in retirement, at one thing or another. I read an article yesterday that talked about working PT as a way to have a happy, healthy retirement. So apparently there doesn't need to be an either/or contradiction about it.

Also, I've worked too hard to get to that 9/1/14 date -- been looking forward to it for too long -- to not count myself as part of the graduating class. I know it's going to feel like a major downshift and a transition from one life to another. And besides, I don't want to be buying everyone drinks, lol. So put me down for Sept. 1, Class of 2014.

Excellent!

Hey...don't forget me! 1/1/2014! There's going to be a boatload of people retiring in my shop in the next 5 years. Baby Boomers. Around 11 out of 25 people.

I just had two of my co-workers retire yesterday, both with 30+ years of service and even more years of experience in their respective crafts. Many more to come in the next few years, probably 50% or so of the specialized trades. Really makes me wonder how Megacorp will handle the brain drain, as there has been little effort to recruit or even encourage mechanical trades training in the local area, as even attrition has been viewed as a cost savings. Part of the desire to ER is because I don't want to be left with a bunch of novices making rookie mistakes - it wasn't that long ago I was in those shoes, and I remember what it was like.

DW and I are now confident of summer of 2014 becoming a perpetual weekend, my planned ER date is 7/4/14, 30 years to the day when DW and I first met. So, please add me to the class of 2014! :greetings10:

Well, the BS bucket just got full again so I'm now contemplating my last day of work being December 31st, and first day of retirement January 1st. Does that put me in the Class of 2013 or 2014? Or do I get to be in both? :)

Okay, my last day of fulltime employment is Feb 17th, 2014. I go part time after that while I go back to university. I'm not sure if this counts as retirement? I'm going to see how PT works out and if it looks like financially it's going to be just fine, then I'll quit altogether mid 2014.

As for 1 more year, I had the 1 more year syndrome. It wasn't until recently that I figured how much I'd save in the extra year. Then using a 3% withdrawal rate, the savings from working the extra year tacked on less than 1k per year retirement income. The extra year of work is not worth getting an extra 1k per year

Help me understand that.... I need some incentive and clarity. Believe me, I am ready....---Nomad
Say a person had 1 mm in retirement savings and their projected retirement spending was $30k per year. That equals a 3% withdrawal rate. If they worked another year and saved $25k, they would then have $1025000 in retirement savings. Using the same 3% withdrawal rate, the yearly withdrawal would be $30,750 per year. This means that the person would spend another year at work for only $750 more in spending per year in retirement

Add me to the Class of 2014!!! I had the retirement talk with the President of the company today and we will be finalizing plans in the next weeks. Surprisingly, I have a feeling of loss or let down as opposed to be the excitement I thought I would feel. Maybe it's just that I've been planning, thinking and talking about it for so long that it hasn't sunk in yet.

I would think feeling a sense of loss would be normal. Maybe everyone expects to feel excited and enthused, but retirement also means the end of something that has been a big part of your life for a long time. Seems to me, I would feel a sense of loss with that, even if I wasn't fond of the job. I had no doubt that my divorce was a good decision, but it still made me sad. Endings always make me sad.

Yes, and some anxiety is normal, too. I have felt that at times.

I started feeling relief and exitement yesterday. My husband just told me I seem happier already. It's true..........I feel such a weight off my shoulders. I'm sure I'll go through a range of emotions in the days ahead but I am ready!

Glad you're feeling better about it. I imagine that, when the time comes, I will feel a range of emotions, like you -- probably a changing mixture of sadness, relief, worry, and excitement.

At about 1 year, I had a sense of dread which I attribute to doubt about being able to afford retirement and maybe a little what will I do once I'm done with work. So I think it's normal to have these feelings once the date is set and you're close. My dread lasted about a month and has not returned. I'll bet your sense of loss will do the same.

It sounds like you enjoy your job, so the let down is understandable. Giving up something you like will always be hard. For me, the work environment changed enough that I won't be having any regrets about leaving. I'll go knowing that I made several major accomplishments with a small regret that some will be lost after I leave. But I'll get over it once I turn off the lights for the final time.
