Some builders wanted to work on a cabin up here on the Ranch but could not get in. This was a great opportunity to use my two new sets of chains. I got the road plowed. There were some deep snow spots I had to lift the plow and drive to the top of the hill so I could plow going down hill. Just as I was getting finished, the plow literally fell apart. I tried to just push it back home (about a mile) but it didn't make it. I walked back and got a couple of tie down straps and got the blade tied to the lift good enough to get it home. I sheared a pin that is about 1 inch in diameter. I have an old parts plow I will try to get a pin from. If not, I'll have to make a trip down to Colorado Springs for the parts I need.

Actually, its been a great day. Plowing roads and doing mechanical stuff is always great fun!

Hermit: Sounds as if you need a good track/skidsteer with a heated cab and an adjustable blade. Colorado does get a lot of snow, and much snow must be moved.

I would love to get a skidsteer. You are probably talking 30 or 40 grand. I have an old tractor and an old plow truck. They get the job done... Most of the time!

My neighbor had a skidsteer and wanted 11k when he moved. It was in good shape and ran well. I should have bought it.

My BIL has one he uses on his hobby farm. He loves it. He paid 13k for it used and was quite happy with the price.

what did you do today?

Received a helpful tip from a company I 'liked' on FaceBook, advising me I could save a lot of money annually if I just put my computer to sleep when I stopped using it. I responded by asking if it was expensive to put my computer to sleep, and they actually responded with wattage information about the difference in power usages between putting my computer to sleep and leaving it on. DW prevented me from responding, "But it didn't work that way for my Daschund..."

It did, however, fuel this:

Yes, I'm fully aware that the mouse disappeared in the second frame. He ran away, in fear for his life. Amazingly, so did the cat ...

... but that's just a side benefit.

That's what I did today...

Very cute! Thanks for sharing!

Oh come on - don't tell me I killed this thread! Lol

Went to see Selma at the movies. Booked our annual trip to Italy.

What did you think about Selma? I think it'd be hard to do the subject justice, especially when MLK Inc. wouldn't allow them to use any of his speeches or newsclips for a reasonable price.

The sniper movie would be preferable to me.

I've been to Italy 5-6 times--last was 2 years ago. With the price of airfare (outside of NorwegianAir) to Europe so high, we're going to Vegas, Hawaii and San Francisco for February.

I think Selma worked because it was so narrowly focused in time and place. It served as a illuminating window into Dr. King's personality and approach without an exhaustive (and exhausting) review of all his work over the years. The events surrounding the march to Montgomery serve as a searing example of the greater civil rights struggles of those times. I thought it was well worth the time, and I am hopeful that high school teachers will show it to their students in the years to come, as a reminder of where we were as a country and as a partial explanation for some of the tensions that still exist today.

I finished reading Unbroken last week. I did not want it to end. Best book I think I have ever read:cool:. I will try and see the movie soon.
Cannot wait until I see American Sniper. I think I will just skip on that book for now and see the movie first :D

Fired up the ancient CAD software, and started drawing plans for a kitchen renovation. Lots of fiddly details.

The plow was badly broken and will take some extensive rebuilding. The spare snow plow head had a crack in it so I took it apart and took it down to Pueblo on Sunday. It was a good excuse to go down there and spend time with friends. Went to a welder and got the plow welded back up on Monday. Stopped and bought some parts for the plow in Colorado Springs on the way back home.

Today, I plan to change all the oil, filters and hydraulic fluid in my tractor and crank it up for the first time in several months. Getting ready for spring a little early this year.

Hey Gumby -
Where are you going in Italy? I love that you make it an annual trip. Since we schlep kids with us - we have to separate trips by a few years for budgetary reasons... but will be going there this summer (among other places.) Our plan is to visit cousins (2nd cousins of DH) in Sicily, then up to Bologna and to Venice. (Then off to the rest of Europe)

Unbroken, the book, was a real page turner. I found the movie disappointing. At least half of it took place in the Japanese POW camp, and the unrelenting abuse of the stoic hero by the camp commander was just dehumanizing and depressing. I couldn't wait for it to end.

+1 I agree. I read the book first then saw the movie. Enjoyed the book but was unimpressed by the movie. They left so much information out.

+2. I did not read the book but had been told the story by friends who loved it. I felt really guilty when I realized I couldn't wait for the movie to be over.

Loaded up my HSA for 2015. Credit Union is paying 1.5% APY on HSA deposits, nothing like having my cake and eating it too!

Renewed my driver's license. It took 45 minutes, almost all of that waiting at various stages. Usually it takes about 30 minutes so they were running slow today.

Gotta love West Virginia. In MD that can easily take 2 hours or more unless they've made some radical changes since we moved.
