Would it be possible to add a feature to ignore an entire forum? Yes, I know I could just not click the forum, but if I could keep all threads in a particular forum from showing up on the Portal page, that would be cool

Also, when I ignore a thread, it still shows up on the Portal thread list.

Yeah, me too. I use the portal feature exclusively and any feature that would let me pick and choose the forums that showed up in the portal would be awesome!

Me three.

(I'm also still rooting for the "don't ever show me threads started by folks on my ignore list"...)

Same here. And I'll bet that the forum that most want to ignore is the Stock Picking forum. The stock picking forum is like having a porno booth at a Baptist convention.

What, you mean all those stories about the preachers "polling the electorate" as it were aren't really true?

Sounds like some folks don't like the political forum. Having just tuned in to one thread there I can see why :) I use an RSS reader to skim through the initial posts on all new topics so I can't avoid bumping into some crud that sucks me in. I guess the fact that I get sucked in says more about me than the OP.:(

While we're on it... some sort of filter that would detect if T-Al has posted foot pictures or regular pictures would be nice :p

My vote is for ignoring anything in the SoapBox and any thread started by a poster on my "Ignore Poster" list.

Yup. "Ignore Forum" on a grand scale is getting increasingly appealing, especially when mods reach out with the muzzle every 5 minutes.

Any other forums you like, Nords? I may be in the market.

Raddr's forum is good, especially for technical asset-allocation discussions and health/fitness info. Great details on the nuts & bolts of perpetual-traveler lifestyle. Raddr's Early Retirement and Financial Strategy Board :: Index

Greaney's forum... well, after the h0cus years it's down to chirping crickets. He may eventually rebuild an audience but right now it's like a nightclub at 4:30 AM after the band has left and the bouncers have ejected the last inebriated patron. Greaney also updates or posts new articles every few months, which I find at the bottom of the chronological listing.
Retire Early Home Page Discussion Board :: Index

REHP Chronological Index.

I enjoy a local board (HawaiiThreads.com) and you might find an equivalent in your area. These guys even host regular potlucks and holiday gatherings, although that might be tough to establish in some metropolitan communities.

I occasionally drop in on a couple veteran's boards, too, even if it's just to remind myself why I don't miss active duty...

What do people think of vanguard diehards and the morningstar boards?

Hey, I am a moderator on that board dang it! Just deleted more porn spam today. :)

I spent a couple years there (under the pseudonym "Nords") and there are/were some of this board's posters over there too.

IMO M* largely ignores moderation unless it's the most heinous of spam, although ironically the boards themselves were clogged with M*'s ads.

The Bogleheads board split off from Vanguard Diehards explicitly because M* refused to do anything about H0cus. They took the opportunity to install draconic moderator's rules that make every other discussion board's regulations look like Yahoo! Finance, although Bogleheads may have since mellowed. Otherwise they seem to be pretty much a VD clone, and they share a lot of the same posters.

Vanguard Diehards is a great place to talk about Vanguard, Bogle, Treasuries, and passive investing. Lots of high-quality financial advisors & financial authors there. Any other financial topics seem to be at one's own risk and active investors are mercilessly driven away. Stockpickers are tarred, feathered, adorned with tinfoil hats, and dropped from black helicopters. H0cus was only banned from M*'s VD when over 300 VD members moved over to Bogleheads-- or maybe it was when H0cus threatened to crash an upcoming Diehards reunion with Bogle. Taylor & Mel (on VD) are nice guys but there are a lot of long, drawn-out threads bickering for paragraphs over the most minor he-said she-said issues. It's fun to watch Larry Swedroe and Rick Ferri indulge in their grudge-match face-slapping contests, but it's usually when they're marketing their latest article/book. Bernstein used to post over there. I believe Eric Haas, a financial advisor and fellow recovering submariner, also posts there.

The "Hands On" board is great, especially Sambro (an pottery artist in his 90s with a 100% equity portfolio) and Ben. They may still have their public portfolio tracking system that brings discipline & accountability to their ideas & recommendations. "Investing DURING Retirement" is pretty good except for a combative troll in his 80s named Vig/Avilynn. I don't know if he's still around or if he poisoned himself on his own venom.

"Fidelity Funds" and "Berkshire" never seemed to get beyond the basics.

And a darn good moderator too!

I think moderators will bring Mideast peace before they'll bring Greaney's board back to life. That whole Hocomania thing drove me away and I haven't seen any reason to hang around. But maybe that'll change, one poster at a time...

Not a value judgement, merely an observation: Raddr's board is fairly conservative politically. IMHO, YMMV, taxes and fees not included, void where prohibited, blah, blah, blah. Only saying for Brew's benefit...

I believe Vig has seen the light (or maybe "gone into the light" :p ) since he hasen't been around on this, or the M*'s "Investing During Retirement" forum. The IDR folks had enough of his cra* and sort of "ganged-up" on him there. That's why he started posting on Diehards (under the name "Vig Oren", I believe).

.maybe it was when H0cus threatened to crash an upcoming Diehards reunion with Bogle..

One of the more amusing threads ever. H0suc inviting himself to the gathering and the guys putting the event together throwing it in reverse and trying to disinvite him in an ever escalating manner. First somewhat politely and then much less so.

I do notice the Bogleheads do have some difficulty grasping Kayak use and the finer points of Bacon.

There is hope - my unified general theory of chickenheartedness seems catch some traction although they insist on calling it something else - some even claiming it was invented by Bogle first.

Rookies - I'm warming them up with Target Retirement/ I am not sure they are ready for Pssst Wellesley full blast yet.

I do not recommend: "slice and dice sucks and yer Mama wears combat boots."

heh heh heh - a more better/ie more elegant poster than myself could possibly whip the bacon on em. And yes I have posted on Raddr's and Greany's board but not for a while. :D .

I will write up some specifications on a comprehensive ignore system and post back shortly. Right now this seems to be a summary of things, places (and ways) you would like to ignore.

- Ability to ignore/hide threads started by people on your ignore list
- Ability to ignore/hide individual threads
- Ability to select forums to ignore/hide from New Posts and the Home "Portal" Page
- When reading through a forum by "next thread" have it skip threads if marked ignored or started by someone on your ignore list.

Is there anything else I am missing or other suggestions?

Not sure if this is included:

Thanks added to the list above.

I hope everyone is at least somewhat appreciative of the humor in this thread.

Without humor, there is only death. :)

BTW, is there anyway that I can always have that smiling senior lady who really wants to date me on my banner ad?

Ha

I don't get that one. OTOH, at least I am no longer being bombarded by the gay & lesbian housing development in Arizona.
