What do people think of vanguard diehards and the morningstar boards?
I spent a couple years there (under the pseudonym "Nords") and there are/were some of this board's posters over there too.
IMO M* largely ignores moderation unless it's the most heinous of spam, although ironically the boards themselves were clogged with M*'s ads.
The Bogleheads board split off from Vanguard Diehards explicitly because M* refused to do anything about H0cus. They took the opportunity to install draconic moderator's rules that make every other discussion board's regulations look like Yahoo! Finance, although Bogleheads may have since mellowed. Otherwise they seem to be pretty much a VD clone, and they share a lot of the same posters.
Vanguard Diehards is a great place to talk about Vanguard, Bogle, Treasuries, and passive investing. Lots of high-quality financial advisors & financial authors there. Any other financial topics seem to be at one's own risk and active investors are mercilessly driven away. Stockpickers are tarred, feathered, adorned with tinfoil hats, and dropped from black helicopters. H0cus was only banned from M*'s VD when over 300 VD members moved over to Bogleheads-- or maybe it was when H0cus threatened to crash an upcoming Diehards reunion with Bogle. Taylor & Mel (on VD) are nice guys but there are a lot of long, drawn-out threads bickering for paragraphs over the most minor he-said she-said issues. It's fun to watch Larry Swedroe and Rick Ferri indulge in their grudge-match face-slapping contests, but it's usually when they're marketing their latest article/book. Bernstein used to post over there. I believe Eric Haas, a financial advisor and fellow recovering submariner, also posts there.
The "Hands On" board is great, especially Sambro (an pottery artist in his 90s with a 100% equity portfolio) and Ben. They may still have their public portfolio tracking system that brings discipline & accountability to their ideas & recommendations. "Investing DURING Retirement" is pretty good except for a combative troll in his 80s named Vig/Avilynn. I don't know if he's still around or if he poisoned himself on his own venom.
"Fidelity Funds" and "Berkshire" never seemed to get beyond the basics.
Hey, I am a moderator on that board dang it! Just deleted more porn spam today.
And a darn good moderator too!
I think moderators will bring Mideast peace before they'll bring Greaney's board back to life. That whole Hocomania thing drove me away and I haven't seen any reason to hang around. But maybe that'll change, one poster at a time...
