Hi. U.K. poster here, so everything I’m talking about has/is being done under our National Health Service,

I’m 67, had cataract surgery on one eye last March, and the other eye last July. The first one took a while to settle, some eye strain, headaches etc. The second was no trouble at all. Everything was fine.

I went back to my optician (you may have a slightly different name for this in the US) and he has referred me back to the hospital, something to do with the capsule surrounding the new lens being clouded by left over bacteria, which he says a simple procedure can fix. It seems now to affect both eyes.

Also, both eyes are now impacted with floaters, called Weiss rings, which are really annoying.

Can anyone here offer some insight, or knowledge or personal experience which might reassure me going forward?

Thanks!

PD

My eye doctor said that if you have a lot of floaters you will notice them much more once your cataracts are gone. He also said that some people need laser treatment awhile after cataract surgery. That’s all I remember because it’s been about 4 years since I had mine done.

I believe there's another thread about the post-cataract laser treatment. It's the YAG laser. About 30% of cataract patients need that procedure done so it's quite common. My wife had hers done at the beginning of this month and she saw a dramatic improvement immediately - literally on the ride home she could tell the difference.

I have lots of floaters, see them all the time. But no "rings", just random debris floating in there. No surgery either, stock nearsighted eyes with a little astigmatism.

It does sound like posterior capsule opacification, which is very common and can be fixed with YAG laser treatments. There are a lot of problems that can arise after cataract surgery. Most are fairly easy to resolve with eye drops. I got a distance lens in my right eye in the early fall and it was excellent initially for distances from about 8 feet to infinity. Recently it started getting a little blurry to the point that I can't read close captions on TV. I went to my optometrist who had me see the retina specialist. The retina specialist diagnosed retinal swelling, another common post surgery complication. Hopefully it will resolve with treatment. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee.

Nice to hear about this subject. I'm scheduled 2/22 for cataract surgery and 2 weeks later on the other eye.

Ditto - DH is having it this coming week and the week after.
