I haven't donated a kidney, but have seen how such a toll having to go through kidney dialysis is for a close friend and family members of other friends.
I've been very interested in a project called "The Kidney Project" which is pretty much an implantable artificial kidney that is about the size of a coffee cup and isn't hooked up to an external power source (like a dialysis machine) but instead run by the person's blood pressure. Not only such a possible life saving thing, but the technology is quite interesting too. This would perform the majority functions of a regular kidney whereas dialysis only performs about 10%.
If there's enough funding, I read that human trials are scheduled for 2017. Otherwise, the human trials will be delayed. Imagine a time where folks on the wait list don't have to wait (sadly, many die waiting) and don't have to suffer the toll dialysis takes.
