A friend is thinking about bringing a small case of his fav tools with him when he comes to visit so he can help on a project. Small hard case will have TSA lock and cable. Some battery operated tools, some other favorite tools. He assumes this can't be carried on (drill bits may be classified as weapons?)

I can't find anything on how to insure for excess value. On the United website, even when the term comes up in "search" the information doesn't even include excess value insurance.

Any comments appreciated.

I’d break up the set, carrying on as much as possible. If drill bits are not allowed in carry on, then just put those in the suitcase.

Or alternatively, ship the tools via FedEx or UPS. The cost of shipping may not be too different than the insurance you are looking for.

Edit to add: TSA likes batteries in the main cabin, not the cargo hold...

Most travel insurance plans will cover excess value in checked or carry on luggage, and some have baggage insurance riders to cover this. Also, some credit cards may have coverage for this in their member benefits.

You don't know what kind of day the TSA agents are having when your tool box comes through...they may want to look inside. A UPS shipment will ensure they get there in 1 piece (assuming you pack it well) without being rifled through....not sure how Xray scanner effect batteries though.
