Im replacing my 10 yr old laptop. Which screensize would you choose ? Opinions and thoughts?

I guess we need a bit more info. How do you use the laptop? How much do you travel with it? What size do you have now? If this your primary computer?

It depends. I chose a 17" because then I can comfortable use it without glasses and it was the most powerful I could find. It rarely ever leaves my desktop. I went with a Lenovo P71 Zeon. I think they are now P72. I would not recommend the Zeon after having one, no real noticeable difference from an I7.

I am always inclined to go for more screen ‘real estate’ when ever possible. When at home My laptop has a large secondary screen attached to it. I often have multiple apps running.

I have 3 laptops. The nicest one I bought to replace my home desktop. I got the big screen. I like the screen real estate but I have never travelled with it. It is just too big. But it can move room to room sometimes.

I have a 15 inch I travel with. Would not want bigger as I like to travel light.

3rd one is seldom used. It is smaller and slower but more portable.

It all depends on use as I see it.

I had a 17" laptop and thought it was just a little bulky, especially when traveling, plus it didn't fit in my nice SwissGear laptop bag. Picked up a lightweight Asus Vivobook 15.6" last year and very happy with it. Didn't realize they made a 17" laptop under 3 lbs., can imagine it must be pricey.

Would love the simplicity of a laptop, but... will stick with my PC Desktop...
Too many plugins..
Regular PC/Screen, 110V connections
USB for mouse/keyboard.
Headset
USB Speakers
Wireless USB antenna
5 day weather USB transmitter to wall screen
1 T External Hard drive
External DVD drive
HDMI to Fire TV for second screen in BR.
Skype camera
Open USB plug for thumb drives

All set up in the living room, next to my recliner.
Similar setup in my bedroom, w/computer #2,
Simple setup in the den, for jeanie...computer #3

Works for us... just bought a new refurbished Dell from Amazon for $93, w/ Windows 10 Pro... (free shipping two day delivery). Perfect! :)

Get the smaller screen and when home use and external big screen, i have a 17" unusable on a plane, too big.

I used to use a 17 inch, but switched to a 14 inch--less weight. My 17' was heavy.

I travel with a Fire 8 tablet. So much easier to handle, and it's all I need to travel with.

It’s for home use. I have 17 now.

We’ve been downsizing our laptops for portability and lap comfort. Had 15” for years and lately went to 13”. But a big part of that is that we do have 5K 27” inch iMacs when we need large screens.

Use the iPad mini most of the time for reading and web surfing.

This 17 inch laptop at only 2.95 lbs just came out this year 2019. It’s insanely light, and battery life at 19.5 hours .. but reviews says 10-12 hours realistically. They also claim it has the same dimensional footprint as most 15.6 laptops, as they try to fit a 17 inch screen in the chassis of a 15.6

I’d get the smaller unit (easier to carry around, fits in my small daypack), but be sure it has the ports and power to drive the largest external monitor you ever plan on using. Right now, I’ve got a Dell XPS13 (i7 Skylake, 16GB RAM), but connect it to an external 34” curved LG monitor and keyboard and mouse when home. I also recently upgraded the SSD to 2TB, so I think it’s set for a while.

But for home use is low weight really worth paying more for?

On second thought,
I will also bring it for travel around the United States .. but if I go to Europe, i will just bring my 12.9 inch IPad

I chose a 17" IPS screen on the new Dell laptop that I bought last fall. The 17" screen is gorgeous.

For me it was an easy decision. My vision is not great so I love having everything a little bigger. Also I seldom need to travel or carry it so its 7.2 pound weight makes very little difference to me. If/when I do need to travel with it, it would be in a rolling suitcase anyway so I don't think the weight would be so very terrible. At home I never move it to a different location.

How do you feel about your current 17 inch laptop?

I'd think if that is your only computer, switching to anything smaller might seem really small. Plus, since It's for home use, portability may not be a factor for you.

I'm partial to using a desktop when at home. I do have two laptops. Both smaller than 15 inches. If I was to get another laptop, I'd consider getting a 15 inch one for the extra screen size understanding the larger size as a trade off. Either a larger size or better resolution as for now, the laptops I have work short term when traveling but I wouldn't want to use for extended amounts of time.

My Chromebook is just a little over 11" and I can see it fine. Of the 2 you are looking at 15" seems plenty big.

Thanks everyone. I just ordered the 17 inch from Costco, which has a 90 day return policy. Will see if it fits my needs. I dont want to strain my eyes too
