Made it to the other bay

For those who may be tracking our 3000 mile cross-country move from Tampa to San Francisco, we got here safe and sound and are just now finishing our unpacking. This neighborhood is awesome with scores of restaurants (modest prices, family run, authentic), lots of walking routes, 25 min to SF by commuter rail. It will be a perfect staging area (month to month rental) for finding a house or condo to purchase after we catch our breath and get to know the area better.

The move itself - that is, Allied Van Lines and affiliates - was a disaster; damaged furniture, lost items, 9 days late showing up, etc. Just stuff, nothing really "important." I can confirm that the unburdening effect of a large downsize truly is liberating in many ways. Not easy, but worth it for us.

The kids/grandkids seem genuinely glad to have us nearby. We were pressed into serious service twice already due to pneumonia occurring in my grandson and d-in-law around the same time, so we have had them all over, feeding them and DW is happily nurturing away (they're both recovering well). D-in-L: "You got here in the nick of time."

We'll venture into SF in the upcoming week and catch a Giants game, maybe catch dinner. Everything is all right.

Don't you just love those family run, moderately priced restaurants? I do. Good, healthy, home cooked meals and after a while they treat you like family, too. I'd say that is a big "plus" to your new location.

Welcome to the area, Rich! Glad to hear that you are enjoying your new environment and that you are reunited with the family at last.

When we moved to SF last year, we had our share of damage and delays. This is all memories now. I'm sure you will forget about those unfortunate mishaps soon enough. For us, downsizing was painful at first, but quite liberating in the end. No regrets.

I went to a Giants' game last Saturday and the ambiance was great after they won the world series last year.

Welcome to Calif - and remember Mark Twain said that the worst winter of his life was a summer in San Francisco. We used to go (from Sacramento) to Candlestick to see the Giants when I was a kid - ALWAYS took sweaters - even if it was +100 here in the valley. It gets COLD in SF. Brrrrrrrr...

Concur that you always bring a windbreaker and sweater to San Francisco. It seems like the warmer it is in the metro area south of San Francisco the foggier/chillier it is around the Bay.

We will be in Los Altos around June 20th, if it looks like we will have free time let's get together for a glass of wine.

During my military career, I moved the household 13 times, every time with some no-name trucking outfit that was the lowest bidder to the base transportation office.

When I was just a new 2nd Lt, my boss's wife told me to expect at least 10% loss in every move due to damage or theft, and that proved to be remarkably accurate over the next couple of decades.

With any kind of luck, you'll be happy and content to stay in the area forever, so just put it out of mind and move on.

Congratulations on surviving the move -- that's about as good as it gets!

I do enjoy finding those gems. Just this past 2 weeks we had Indian, Japanese, Raman noodles and a couple pieces of Heidi's pies. Gained a few pounds, well worth it.
