YOLO

I guess I think of the yolo crowd, at least the millennial version of it, to be those who choose to follow their travel dreams and exit the workforce for a spell in order to see the world. I'm ok with them doing so. They may lose ground to their more industrious peers, but I think the risks are worth it for them.

Everyone has to answer for their own values in the end. And how fortunate we are to get to choose how to live our lives, when there are many around the world who have no such opportunities.

What do I think abut the YOLO crowd? I don't want them anywhere near me. Too much trouble. Other than that they can crash their hang gliders into any tree or building they want

As for me, I'm lucky to have an easily obtained "this is great!" threshold. A good pizza makes me just as happy as a $100 meal. A typical suburban house makes me just as happy as a McMansion. A car that starts and runs reliably and has working AC/heat and a radio is fine, it doesn't have to be new. So, living my "once" isn't too pricey.

+1.

One SIL though is the real YOLO big spender and that is in fact her justification/rationalization. To my knowledge she hasn't kept a car long enough to wear out the OEM tires; everything she buys is on credit because money burns a hole in her pocket and all she looks at is "Can I make the payments". She will be a slave to the credit industry for the rest of her life.

I just don't see any future down that road.

Some are more into saying YOLO or YOYO than acting it. My great nephew is 22 and he and his friends keep saying YOYO or Your only Young once. Sure the kids act childish, silly hats and things but he also is going to college and in the National Guard and building credit to buy a house. Some of that stupid stuff only can be done while you are young or more easily like groups of friends going hiking. He will get over being childish soon enough.

In some ways I agree with the young YOLO crowd. When you are young and able, have fun and adventures. But I also say don't do anything permanent in your 20's. Don't get pregnant, don't get tattoos. My .02 cents. I feel that any person who buys anything on credit (except a mortgage) is part of the yolo group.

You also must consider that only 50% of Americans have any retirement savings at all. In the hey day of America they would have pensions. Not any more....

Based on my observations in social media, YOLO is not about spending money on things. It's about experiences, spending time with friends, having fun, traveling, doing crazy things, etc...

There are going to be lots of tragic stories coming out of that. The outcome may be a national retirement system or the culture will change to one of more personal financial responsibility. I would not bet on the latter.

The "Spendarina" SIL that I wrote about earlier is going to be one of those stories. She talks of retiring to FL and what they're going to do there but I don't see them being able to do much more than sit around their trailer and watch OTA TV.

retirementguy1- You said "My .02 cents. I feel that any person who buys anything on credit (except a mortgage) is part of the yolo group."

And you live in or near Las Vegas?? I'm shocked. And surprised the locals haven't tried to string you up for heresy yet :ROFLMAO::2funny::eek: .

yup, that's pretty much as I see it too. I never connected it to a subculture or spending.

Yep, it's easy to be a genius when you are surrounded by idiots. We get the rejects from around the country. That's why it's so easy for me to clean up. My savings rate is close to 75%

I've almost always heard the term invoked by stupid, foolish people who were looking for an excuse to do something dangerous and/or illegal

I guess I get a little frustrated when I see family members and friends live way beyond their means. I want to say something but can't since its not my business. Most of us have learned about deferred gratification, living below your means and prudent saving and investing. We are the valedictorians of our class, others will learn the hard way...

It is definitely best not to say a word. In my experience, the person will (rightly) get very put off. Even saving and investing advice that has nothing to do with changing sending habits is often unwelcome and almost never put to use. The only time I will offer an opinion is if I am directly asked (and then the wording of the reply is very important).
Advice on sex or religion would probably be more welcome.

For me the counter to YOLO is YMOYL, how to generate financial independence in order to work and live as I want not as financial circumstances dictate.

Hey, I've never used that acronym in my life!

I try to live by YOLO, but not in that crazy spend everything do 50 lines of coke while base jumping over a pit of sharks with laser beams on their heads in order to defuse the nuclear bomb rubix cube puzzle and save the president from Atlantean terrorists (surely I'm not the only one with friends who do this :D).

If you get too focused on saving money you miss out on life, but if you don't focus on saving money somewhat you'll never get to be free to experience life like you want. Sure it may be more expensive going out with friends than staying in watching netflix but hey, you only live once so go out, have a beer, and enjoy a night with friends within a reasonable budget! Besides it reminds me of a radio commercial I heard once, nobody ever had a great story that started with "remember that time we stayed in for the night?"

Staying in can be a lot of fun with the right partner;)

And that reminds me of my favorite ending to so many great stories: "Hold my beer and watch this!"

Its a (nominally) free country, so YOLO it up if that is your idea of a good time. The problem is that too often these induhviduals create problems for themselves and then expect everyone else to pay for it. Who got bailed out/could strategically default when house prices crashed: the no money down leverage to the hilt crowd, or people like me that put 20% down, took a 15 year mortgage and paid extra every month on top of that? I took it in the ass while the YOLO crowd walked free. So YOLO away, but stay the hell away from my checkbook.
